That single beast killed a lot of cubs and kits - you would think that they'd have scattered and it would have only taken a few before the cavalry arrived. It sounds like more than one of the mashups attacked Nocturn and the additionals escaped in the confusion.
It also sounds like they were aimed at the Shade Scouts. Deliberately. And yet, one kid escaped because he also turned out to be a mashup, hidden under a normal looking pelt. This is Shingeki no Kyojin territory.
