Raku Review #13 Captain Scarlet and The Mysterons
I was settling down for bed the night before and I then thought, "This series has now became 55 years old now, I need to make a review of it." So, here we go.
Captain Scarlet And The Mysterons (commonly known as just Captain Scarlet) was a British show created by the legendary Gerry Anderson, the mind behind Fireball XL5, Stingray and Thunderbirds in the year 1967.
The show is also considered to have a transition cut gimmick where it would swap between two scenes with a drum beat.
Captain Scarlet's plot is set in the futuristic year of 2068, where the fictional organisation Spectrum defends the Earth in a war against the enigmatic Mysterons from Mars; a mysterious force with the powers of Retro Metabolism. They can recreate an exact likeness of someone or something such as a person or a vehicle. But first the original must be destroyed.
Spectrum's headquarters is a gigantic aerial platform under the name of Cloudbase.
It's control room is operated and seen to by the commanding officer of Spectrum, Colonel White and his right hand, Lieutenant Green. Then you have the head medical expert Doctor Fawn, the all women team of pilots, the Angels, consisting of Melody, Rhapsody, Harmony, Symphony and Destiny and then you got some of the top officers of spectrum themselves, Captain Ochre, Captain Grey, Captain Magenta, Captain Blue and most of all; the indestructible Captain Scarlet!
If you wish to know why Captain Scarlet is indestructible is because like the Mysterons, he too has retro metabolism. In his case, this means no matter how fatally injured he gets in the line of duty, whether it means taking a big fall, or getting roughed up in a fatal car crash, or being shot a bunch of times, in a few hours, he'll miraculously heal.
Spectrum has plenty of vehicles in the series to confront the Mysteron threat with including the Spectrum Patrol/Saloon Car (SPC or SSC), the Angel Interceptor, The Spectrum Passenger Jet (SPJ), The Yellow Fox tanker, The Spectrum helicopter, the Spectrum Pursuit Vehicle (SPV), the Maximum Security Vehicle (MSV), the Magnacopter and others.
The events of the show begin in episode 1 when spectrum officer Captain Black finds the Mysterons' complex and attacks it when he mistakes a moving part in the complex for a weapon. Angered, the Mysterons' declare a war of nerves on Earth and manipulate Captain Black, turning him into their agent.
Their first act of retaliation, is to assassinate the world president.
Captain Scarlet and fellow officer Captain Brown are on their way to rendezvous with the president to escort him when they end up dying from an unexpected car accident. The mysterons make two duplicates of the spectrum officers. After nearly being successful with having Captain Brown kill the world president, the Mysterons use Scarlet, but Captain Blue is sent after Scarlet in an SPV alongside, Destiny, Harmony and Rhapsody in their angel interceptors.
They chase Scarlet up to the top of an 800 foot tall car park tower where after being attacked by a Spectrum helicopter that had been taken over by the Mysterons which Destiny swiftly disposes of, Captain Blue engages the Mysteron controlled Captain Scarlet in a gunfight that ends with him scoring the winning blow, causing Scarlet to lose his hold and take an 800 foot drop while Blue rescues the world president.
At the end of the episode, Colonel White announces to all members of Spectrum about their success in their first out of many future battles against the Mysterons and the mysteron clone of Captain Scarlet has recovered from the sheer fall and is now, no longer under the Mysteron's control and has gained their abilities of retro metabolism, making him a virtually indestructible asset in their continuing fight against the Mysterons!
The original series lasted for 32 episodes and would even gain popularity again in the 90s and early 2000s just like Thunderbirds. The series is considered in my opinion somewhat dark in the sense you get characters dying on screen; yeah, I know that the characters are puppets and all, but yeah.
The show would also have a reboot in 2005 that used CGI and even did a lot of different things compared to the classic series, these would include the reboot being called Gerry Anderson's New Captain Scarlet and the new designs of everything from the characters, to the vehicles. This reboot would do many other changes including, the names of the vehicles, thus we have the SSC/SPC as the Cheetah, the SPV as the Rhino, the Angel interceptor as the White Falcon, the SPJ as the Swift, the Spectrum helicopter as the Hummingbird and Cloudbase as Skybase. They also changed the genders of Captain Ochre and Lieutenant Green and even made some new characters that were members of Spectrum such as Captain Orange, Captain yellow, Lieutenant Silver and the more focused on member, Dr Gold, who is considered by fans as both a replacement of Dr Fawn, or the reboot's version of Dr Fawn. There were also exclusive vehicles used as well such as special bikes with disengaging wings called the Stallion Raid Bikes and black fighter jets which I assume were used by Captain Black and the Mysterons which were called Vampires. It also depicted Captain black as having two sides with one of those sides being him trying to fight the Mysteron's control over him. But above all else, they still did what is traditional with Captain Scarlet and that would be the drumbeat transitions.
Just like every show Gerry Anderson made in the 60s this show would have plenty of phenomenal music orchestrated and composed by Barry Gray.
Well, I think that's everything I could think of writing for this review, I hope you like it, I think you can find episodes of the classic series on Dailymotion and full episodes of the reboot on YouTube.
Once again, thank you for reading this review.
