Bullets cracked overhead, the two of them ducking behind the rockwall. For a moment they just looked at each other, then down the wall at the others. Each man crouched watching them and waiting for something. Baron looked back at Kjartan, "These kids need some motivation or we're gonna stay stuck here. Think you can manage a shoot and scoot?" His words were returned with a scowl, the snow leopard crawling a bit closer. Kjartan spoke as he began sliding in a new magazine. "There's most definitely a machine gun, plus the extreme likelyhood of a sniper. Consider me coward if you like, but I'm not seeing how my death by the soviet firing squad on that hill will motivate them."
The fox rested his head against the rock wall, opening the bolt on his rifle. He spoke as he slid in another few bullets. "We both pop up, I shoot at the machine gun, you run. I see another guy with a scope he dies. You just need to make it the fifty meters to the treeline without getting shot. Once you're there I can rally the rest to follow suit." Kjartan looked up at the sky thinking through each detail. He couldn't remember if there was even cover beyond thin trees ahead.
Kjartan finally spoke, "Alright, I'm in your hands, you just get me there and I'll get to work." Baron shifted onto his knees, getting his rifle ready. Kjartan got onto his feet pressing himself against the wall. The tip of his ear attracting a shot that ran over the two. Baron jolted up and fired, Kjartan darting over the top. As Baron loaded in the next round and raised his rifle back to his shoulder his helmet flew off. A loud pang ringing out through the valley.
