In the old days of film like: 35mm film, 70mm film (maybe), 16mm film, 8mm film (possibly) you'd see a woman especially all beautifully dressed and with makeup either holding a card with colors to test the color, tone, contrast and all that jazz. even the black and white counterpart or equivalent would do something similar except instead of testing color it's to test the shades of black, white and gray (grey) on films that would've either been shot in black and white or printed in black and white, you would only see a China Girl as theyr were called for a second or just appear for a brief second, most china girls were still images and some were shot with motion meaning you'd get to see the china girl blink or just grin for the few seconds the test lady would appear in for a few frames, these test women would usually appear at the start of the film reel during the SMPTE Foot Countdown Leader but for a split second, and they would also appear at the end. sadly I have never actually watched a film reel not even one of my favorite movies printed onto a 35mm, 16mm or 8mm film reel yet. But I hope I get the chance someday.
