Pout War for Pendland"Leave it the otterfolk of Pendland to turn their embarrassing years of bowing to dwarven rule into their greatest boon." -Bayland envoy on Pendland's Pout WarSubterranean warfare is a complex game of defense and sieges, one for which masterful craftsmanship, mega projects, and endless tunnels of forts and defenses create a nasty bulwark of problems. Dwarves do not take these problems very well, as campaign grind to a halt entirely because a single fort cannot be breached, and thus a Pout War starts. Pout Wars are dwarven wars of anger, their needs for conquests and expansion halt underground and so they go into the surface world to expand. Most wars end in stalemates or disaster, but the Pout War for Pendland was one of the few victories afforded to the dwarves. The Dwarves couldn't defeat a goblin stronghold in the east, so the returning army led by its High King invaded the otterfolk kingdom of Pendland instead, amazingly conquering it.
The original fate of Pendland was extermination and colony building, as the parliament of the UDH demanded of it, since such a victory brought the UDH to a coastline to expand its trade. Instead, the machination of the High King got it turned into a personal fiefdom, and the beastfolk of Pendland made into slaves. Dwarven customs of slavery are often considered oddly specific, having slaves wear stone collars which show fealty to all of the dwarven kind rather than an individual master. Although called slaves and often sometimes treated as such at first, the beastfolk of Pendland were made more autonomous, forging the first dwarven fleet into existence and expanding trade as the colony was used to enrich the royal family of the UDH. Through diplomacy and careful intrigue, the dwarves were able to keep Pendland for a decade under their rule.
Yet, one failed invasion to retake the country led to the Beastfolk states to make a deal with the devil, the Great Horde's successor states to help reclaim the country from the dwarves. The dwarves may have lost Pendland, but they took a number of slaves back to their realm over the decade they had ruled, and had a lasting impact on its nobility and merchants. Pendland still has ancestor worshippers in their southern lands, with kobold and goblin owned businesses and enclaves still seen in Pendland cities. Pendland became more advanced and organized under the UDH, although the two nations have 'frosty' relationships with one another. Beastfolk peons are still seen in the UDH, especially its capital, most being descended from families moved to the capital as servants, and who remain as apprentice masons, engineers, and menial servants to this day.
