The wanderer
1- Mist was once an ordinary Viking woman living in Vinland with a bright future ahead of her, she dreamed of peace, she dreamed of love and the little things life had to offer. She was young, naïve, and kind natured.
2- One day a woman within the settlement, named Brenda, came with a bear cub and a secret, she became a loner because of her bear and the secret, which was perilous, she ate once the flesh of a bear goddess and she carried the burden to protect her son, and the strength to do it by changing from a feeble female into a mighty bear warrior. (One tf page showing Brenda changing into a bear)
3- She was not a threat to anyone, but her cub, Tarben, grew unruly as he became an adult and got her into a lot of trouble.
Her hidden bear strength came out during a fight in a tavern, and she killed a man, she left the fight with flesh wounds but her son, Tarben, was heavily wounded. When she left town to seek medicine for Tarben was when the nightmare began.
4- 30 men from within the settlement, including Mist’s father, gathered, and killed Tarben, ate Tarben, and grew as strong as a bear god each because Tarben was the son of a bear goddess. This was how the berserkers came to be, they were no longer human body nor soul.
5- They killed everyone in the settlement except for the male sons, while Mist and other girls hid and watched in horror how they killed the women, sacked the settlement, and burned it to the ground. Mist was saved from death but would be forever plagued by nightmares of what happened to Vinland.
6- Brenda rescued 100 orphan girls, including her, they traveled and settled within a local tribe that welcomed them. Brenda became a local heroine and was taught magic, magic to heal, and magic to change into a spirit animal.
Tarben’s mother was a spirit animal, an animal god, but she was not unique, other spirit animals existed and their spirits could merge with humans. The humans needed to be compatible with the soul of the said animal and the soul of the animal had to agree to rest within the human. (One page tf of a female into cougar)
7- Mist was one among a few who tried merging with the spirit eagle. At first, she loved to change and the freedom she had while flying, but then her nightmares became stronger.
The only way she had to cease having nightmares was to change into an eagle until she did it so much and for so long, she forgot how to change back into a woman.
8-9- Brenda thought she lost her until one day she came back to her, her eagle form gave way to a female, more slender form, but not quite human. (two page tf from eagle to eagle harpy) Her body forgot what her true body was like and was suck as a mid-eagle, mid-woman creature.
She asked Brenda for help to end her nightmares.
10- Brenda told her she had a dream as well; Mist would have to face what she fears the most to save other people from dying in the paws of the berserkers and only her could set the wheel of change in motion.
“I must stay here; I am the heroine of days past and this land needs me. You are needed somewhere else, across the ocean. Go and don’t look back as you have questions, but I don’t have the answers.”
11- Mist flew across the ocean, with one advice in mind, to try to resist the temptation to become an eagle during the voyage, so she traveled as an eagle woman and traveled against the wind, against storms and against hunger and sleep.
She wondered how she would manage to defeat the berserkers should she find them, until she saw something out of the ordinary in the ocean.
12- A young whale surrounded by a pack of big, black, and white creatures who fought against the whale.
The whale must have been much larger and stronger than those animals, and perhaps it was intelligent, but the eagle woman saw delight in the pack of those monsters and fear on the whale, each member of the black and white pack was mean, intelligent, and sadistic in a way Mist never knew…
Were the gods showing her something?
Then a group of whales came for the youngling, Mist was too tired and had to push forward in hope of finding land.
13- Mist collapsed at sea not far from where this happened, luckily for her, the ocean embraced her, and she woke up on a beach close to a building
That building was a monastery, she was on a tiny island where the monks lived in seclusion far from the affairs of men. When they found the bird woman, they thought she was a sign from heaven and they took her in, fed her, and she came back to health and sanity, as she slept soundly for almost a week and had no bad dreams.
The monks and her had no communication with words, but they became fast friends, they realized she sometimes took the form of an eagle, so they called her sorceress. The name sorceress somehow lingered into her heart.
14- Mist flew outside the monastery and beyond, the monks told her to avoid the red spots with smoke at the distance, but she didn’t and couldn’t understand them. Wherever she went red spots were everywhere, the signs of butchery, killings, and massacres, she wondered who did this until she understood.
The berserkers were nearby and were a plague now.
No longer 30, they were more than a hundred now, perhaps many more.
15- Since she could fly, she could also anticipate where the berserkers would attack next, but nobody understood her, and she cried each time a settlement was attacked, her nightmares returned and neither while she slept not while she was awake did she find peace, helpless to defend anyone.
All was in vain; she was nobody’s savior-she thought to herself- her body was tempted into becoming a full eagle once again and renounce her womanhood forever
But she didn’t give up dreaming of a peaceful land to make nest.
16- Eventually one of her flights took her to a coastal town where people could understand her, it was a town with Viking heritage. She came to them from the sky and identified herself as sorceress, whatever that meant, and they understood her as a being made of great magics and capable of using magic.
She was more comfortable around women than men so 4 young women were given to her, to train them. This town was also an enemy to the berserkers.
17- Over the upcoming months her four new friends bonded with undying loyalty and care, she felt these four women were her family now and she eagerly taught them all she knew of magic and shapeshifting.
They were fast learners and were attracted by the idea of a spirit animal. But what kind of animal would be good enough to defend the town against the berserker menace?
The four focused their prayers for days to their pagan gods, until one day the gods answered…
18- A killer whale was stranded at the beach, or may I say whale killer, as Mist thought it was the same animal that attacked the whale youngling.
The whale killer was dying, she asked for a merciful death and strangely enough, she realized the four women and sorceress could understand her.
“We were attacked by a group of whales while we were hunting…two of my eldest daughters died and if I die too my whole pod will perish not knowing how to hunt and survive in these waters. I need your help.”
19- “What can we do for you?”
“You are part eagle, but they are only human, if they eat my brain, my heart and my flesh, they will become as strong as me, as I am a goddess from the water, just swear to me you will seek my pod and join them until they are strong enough to survive, to hunt, to prosper.”
They made an agreement signed on the whale killer’s flesh and blood, they feasted on her and soon enough, they felt strange and drawn into the water.
20- As the four women touched the salty water and were at a swimming distance from the coast, their bodies and minds began the promised change.
21- First, their backs turned black while quite a large dark dorsal fin emerged from it, large enough as nearly to fit their entire backs.
22- Then their bodies elongated to inhuman dimensions, almost three times longer than the tallest of men
23- And then their former slim bodies gained a lot of fat and muscle, making them feel powerful and capable of the extraordinary.
24- Their hands cracked and reformed to develop fins
25- While their feet glued together and became a tail
26- Their hair fell off while their heads grew blowholes, and their facial features were changing
To become the orca, the wolves of the sea.
27- When the change was over, they could recognize each other and they heard the cries of four more orca, who were looking for their dead grandmother. They grieved after learning what happened to her and accepted the four orca women into their pod.
28- Mist would fly around the settlement to see if the berserkers were coming, one would expect a great and bloody battle once the bears and the whale killers met, but well… it was a battle and it was bloody after the berserker boats were attacked by the whale killers and they fell off board, then they were attacked by the marine mammals.
No matter how fast they swam or how sturdy the berserkers where they were no rivals to the orca.
29- The 4 women and their orca kin became the salvation of a coastal town, but there were many other towns still threatened and four women who could become orcas were not enough
Mist travelled to many towns and gave them the secret of shapeshifting and the magic of healing while the four orca friends held the berserkers at bay.
30- The number of orca women (and a few men) multiplied exponentially, locking the berserkers on land.
Both sides were fearful of a final battle, because berserkers were invincible on land, while the berserkers knew they couldn’t venture at seas anymore.
There was a good upside thing to this tie, Mist ceased to have nightmares and instead she dreamt of a peaceful world
31- The final battle against the bear people would mark the end of the Viking era, in one of her dreams Mist saw herself guiding an army of wolf shifters and humans on land while orcas guarded the seas.
The end? Almost!!!
