I wish I had space in the story to get further into the debate of animal experimentation. It's absolutely true that medical science wouldn't be where it is today with it, but it needs to be strictly regulated. Nowadays, the Federal Animal Welfare Act, the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, institutional review boards, and other agencies see to that, but even into the 80's when this story takes place, it wasn't always the case.
