I've already posted about how much I've always loved Vampirella and now that i've done a bit of research, I see that the new owners have destroyed a great old concept by trying to Marvelize (Retroactively recreate an origin because it's too difficult to work with a concept you didn't make up e.g. Wolverine's "bone claws." up until sometime in the nineties, Wolverine was a cyborg mutant with bionically implanted claws. They removed the adamantium from his body and without claws, Wolvie's just a nutter who heals fast. So, "Wait! I know! he had BONE CLAWS all along!!!" ) a backstory that didn't fit the new writer's view.
She went from being a Barbarella-era alien who resembled our vampire legends, which was just fine for the hot chick content of the comics/magazines, to being a true vampire? Whose mother was a child of Lilith and Adam who went good and had a daughter just to hunt vampires? And her home planet was actually part of hell? What kind of stupid shit is that?
The Vampi I remember and love is dead; killed by the same type of hacks who thought it was okay to kill Captain America. This is my tribute to her and the team that brought her to life back at Warren Publishing.
R.I.P.
My original intention was to send this to the new publishers and see if I couldn't get work with them but I'll be damned if I'll work for people who piss on my youthfull memories.

Don't condemn the entire medium 'cuz a few people have the brainworms. In any industry there are people who are in positions beyond their capabilities. You've met them. You still eat food and see movies and listen to music and travel from point A to point B. Just be careful about the authors you are reading and be careful not to invest too much in any one group of characters. More than that, don't trust people who have let you down before. These rules apply to most things in life, but very specifically to comics. I still love comics, I just, as a rule hate most of the editorial powers over Marvel since the nineties and those fuckers who ruined Vampirella.
Back in high school, we had this token fraction of wisdom pertaining to hot girls: "If you don't know what to do with it, leave it the hell alone." The same rule applies generally to most things, but being high scoolers, we thought it was hot women. The guys who got hold of Vampirella and I'm sure a pile of other comic characters not as dear to my heart should've left it the hell alone.

True enough. Although come to think of it, it's mostly superhero comics I don't read. I like comics like Usagi Yojimbo and Star Wars Tales. They kick ass.
You piece of wisdom reminds me of another, "Don't fuck with it if you don't know what it does." This vital piece of wisdom had been ignored by mankind for... ever, actually. Of course, some things can only be understood after you fuck with them, or at least thats the theory. Still, I think the last thing that will be heard before the Universe goes "fwomp" and disappears, will be someone saying "I wonder what this does..."

Well, yeah, the "...if you don't know what it does," is a grey area. If we never fucked with anything the purpose of which we didn't understand, we'd still be living in caves or trees or what have you. It's more like, "If it's obivously beyond your capacity, don't fuck with it." Overestimating oneself is a major human failing and it tends to lead to people being screw-ups, injured, dead, or president of the U.S.
This is a very lovely image. Thoug she doesn't seem too look as voluptous as she looked in the comics. But that's my opinion, it's fine if you like it.
I'm not a longtime Vamirella fan or reader, but I understand what has made you unset. I don't read a lot of superhero comics due to the splashy, gimmicky, "let's be dark and dank for the sake of being dark and dank", "let's mess them up on our own will" treatment of them, which is even worse for long established heroes like Superman, Green Latern, Spider-Man, ect. Of course, there still are some handful of artists and writers that can do a comic book right.

I tend to do my women a little slim, so your opinion is well taken.
One of the problems with most comics nowadays is that every ten years or so, titles and properties get handed off to "new blood" to "keep it fresh." This, apparently, means "screw it up, and piss off our established reader base and get some new readers on with the artist flavor of the month so our shitty writing doesn't matter." The biggest problem is, in comics, the publishers still haven't realized how smart their readers have gotten and they are more worried about selling issues than they are with improving content. As usual where art and commerce collide, commerce wins. Playing to the stupid is where the money is or there wouldn't be so many reality shows, which require nothing of the viewer. Same goes for comics, now, I guess.

Very true, it seems that much of pop culture -- movies, TV, comics, music -- suck because commerce and doing the "hip" thing is more inportant than writing, acting and emoting, direction and, in the case for comic books and animation, good art that is part of the story rathre than overwhelming it. I don't watch a lot of television anymore than in my youth because it's too rotten for my taste. (Not just because of the stupid reality shows, but the stale unfunny sitcoms, dramas that make too much random emphasis on sex and violence. I'm not a total prude on sex and violence in media, though, but only if it is for the context of the sotry, not just for show.)
There are still some good talented people who make great stuff still, even if they are far few and between, such as the "Lions, Tigers and Bears" series from writer Mike Bullock. ANother great writer I have had the pleasure to read is Brain K. Vaugan, who has done some work for DC Comics and Marvel (the "Pride of Baghdad" graphic novel with the wonderful artist Niko Henrichon, "Runaways".)

Coool...That reminds me;I got an offer be a Colorist on a JIM SHOOTER Project back in the 90s right after he got the boot out of the MARVEL BULLPEN...My reply:"I may not have another opportunity to break into the comic biz,but it would only bring harm to my reputation being associated with you and your company...Thank you for the offer,by I must decline..Best of luck to you in your endeavors.."
Good thinking. Jim Shooter ripped my dad off back in the 80's as was his policy for the entirety of his senior publisher tenure at Marvel. Keep in mind this took place before they changed their submission policy to state, clearly, that they own every idea that comes to them until further notice. You might've heard of the characters he created. They were a little team known as Alpha Flight. My dad sent in character work ups as a proposal for a comic series. The write-ups included a character who had powers to manipulete gravity and magentism to fly and other feats(later known as Guardian in the Marvel Universe), and a pair of twins who had electricity related powers, could fly and when they touched, emitted a blinding flash. The brother had no name in my father's proposal. He hadn't thought it out too strongly. The sister character my dad proposed was named Aurora which was then used, verbatim, in the series. When my father wrote Marvel a "what the fuck?" letter, Jim Shooter, Editor-in-Chief of Marvel, personally wrote him back, saying, contradictorily, that both Jack Kirby had created them years ago and that some new blood at Marvel had thought it up. He finished by encouraging my father to sue for copyright violation, if he wanted to have years of expensive litigation on his hands. Class act, that Jim Shooter.
When he started his tenure with Slaughter-fest of Established characters,I knew this A-hole was a big 360 from the Lee way of doing things...I have "A-hole Sense" And It was going overtime when got his phone call.
:oYour Father dreamed up ALPHA FLIGHT?!Omg,I love that group(Should've KNOWN Shooter & Company couldn't have come up with Them)..!
Me & my guys tried going indy once we heard about Marvel's "Black-hole Submission Policy" - My Characters ARE MINE...I may be poor - But they're still MINE..!;)

They only took three of his characters and made one of them nuts and another one gay, which always seemed kinda pointless, as it was never explored (and how can you be more isolated and out of touch with the rest of mainstream comics than being a quebec seperatist) but whatever.
..Sounds like the early stages of their "Broke-back" policy on Character developement;I loved collecting Two-fisted Tales" featuring the Rawhide Kid...Now they've made him gay?!
I was also intriqued by the CIVIL WAR concept, but the powerful implications & ramifications were "dumbed down" to sell books(My CHAMPIONS rpg group had explored this almost 10 years earlier,so I was following the plot twists to see where they'd get it right or not)...
To me Marvel Comics has become the SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE of periodicals:Once something innovative & special...Now - Not So Much...

Well, they definitely had stages.
Stage one: the Lee/Ditko/Kirby era. The art was innovative, but the main draw was the characterization.
Stage two: The Claremont/Miller era. The art was still inovative. In this era, Marvel took real prevalence over DC, primarily by luring DC's best writers away.
Stage three: The Lee/McFarlane/Liefeld era. The art became everything. Title after title was started and abandoned due to no real plot oe character development. Gimmick covers and ridiculous print runs ruined the collectors market. This trend spread.
Stage four: The current era. Once the mass exodus of the most popular artists to Image was complete, Marvel tried to rely on good writing, only to realize that years of neglect had lost them a majority of writers who could actually tell stories. Failing that, Max comics was started, promising more violence and sexual innuendo. All the good stories had been told, so instead of starting fresh with new characters and building new legends, they make decisions to kill the dreams and fond memories of the kids from the 80s. Marvel is now the empty travesty that parents had always warned kids about. "Reading comics will rot your brain." So sad but true... For Marvel.

Another Shooter Legacy was the Tug-of-war between Marvel & DC over Artists & Writers that occassionally happens...When He fired Marv Wolfman for some stupid reason,He took most of Marvel Bullpen with him when he went to DC,and with in a year, took Teen Titans(a 70th place title in 1979)to a Multi-Eagle Award winning franchise.
It's flared up now and again over the years..I guess that's why Exclusive Contracts are the order of the day now...But you certainly have your chronology right;I bowed out around stage 3(I STILL have a Friend who I can't convince him his DEATH OF SUPERMAN Gold Collectors Edition comic isn't worth the paper it's printed on)..

And the BIG TWO can't condone the possibility of there becoming the BIG THREE...Which was almost the fact when Shooter kicked the Reps from SHONEN JUMP out of his office saying"Japanese Comics have NO place in the American Market"...If Archie Goodwin hadn't begged them for the AKIRA rights,Dark Horse or VIZ Comics would've sewn up the Manga/Anime Market...
Yeah,The X-men Issues I have are pretty good emergency fund,I have to go 100 miles to get a decent price, but that's Okay...It took them a while to get that way,but the Art & Writing make them valueable - The missing component of modern comics...
One can only hope that a revivial of Comics;Making a product that Creators can be proud of and Collectors can be proud to own...
