“30 seconds to drop”
The intercom crackled in the back of the C17, a signal for the two dozen paratroopers in the back to stand up and check over each others kit. Rifles, safeties, ammo, parachutes. The lighting inside was an ethereal red to preserve night vision. A Claxon then blared. Oxygen masks were fitted air flow checked each soldier trying to mediate rapid exhales trying not to let the nerves get to them. The tension was palpable, no one spoke. Another claxon this time continuous signalling them to face the cargo ramp at the aircrafts rear there was a a loud sucking whooshing sound accompanied by the mechanical whirr of hydraulics as the ramp cracked opening. Pupils shrunk as the evening sunlight filtered in from above the horizon. At this height it was both bright yet aneamic. The troops tried to steel themselves all of them focusing on a set of lights currently a solid red near the ramp. The windchill whipped at there clothes. It was cold at 30 000ft.
This was the drop of there lives they all knew what they were getting into they’d heard the stories, seen the videos it didn’t make the trepidation any less worse. A periodic beep then sounded the light switched to green. That was there signal the troops sprinted towards the edge of the ramp and leapt into the abyss. Terminal velocity was achieved in a matter of seconds the stomach lurching initial acceleration giving way to the adrenaline rush of freefall. red smoke trailed behind each of them marking there descent. Far below was an abyss of swirling stormy clouds lightning crackled between the stacks of cumulus. They were upon it in seconds. Breathing quickened and hearts raced as the paratroopers breached through the first layer of cloud visions momentarily onscured by misty greyness falling like red rain between the gaps of cirrus. The cloudlayer below was far more hellish, orange effervescent glows broke up otherworldly flashes of turquoise light. The paratroopers punched through the last cloud layer the orange glows giving way to the fiery remains of San Francisco.
Infernos raged in the ruins of city blocks spires of skyscraper rose up from the warzone of streets into the ash choked sky. The black clouds and billowing pillars of oily smoke cast the city into twilight. From the air they could see great swathes of city had been decimated blackened and charred. Massive trenches had been scorched into the landscape, cutting through city blocks. No structures stood in them they were devoid of life. Besides the fire laden trenches there was a trail of circular craters sewn into the devastated city. From the soldiers vantage point it looked biblically apocalyptic.
It was then that they saw what had caused them or more Importantly who had made them.
Seeing him in the flesh didn’t make comprehending his existence any easier. His presence defied any semblance of science or evolution. It was clear he was not of this world. No one knew where he’d come from hed just suddenly appeared and began to carve a path of destruction across the United States wielding a power that was hard to fathom. His features were distinctly vulpine a grey pelt was hidden behind a darker grey and navy bodysuit completed with silver trim. A silver four pointed star on his chest ending in an integrated pair of navy boots and a pair of matching colour gloved sleeves. A mop of dark grey hair spread out between two triangular ears a bushy tail swayed indolently behind him.
And he was absolutely gigantic. The decapitated skyscrapers of the San Francisco skyline barely came up to his knees A loud thoom was audible even at there rapidly decreasing altitude everyfime his booted paws made contact with the ground. Tarmac splintered and buildings quivered as he continued his devastating stroll through the city his boots kickd through buildings like they were sandcastles showering surroundings with chunks of debris the size of houses. He was an impossibility yet there he stood an awe inspiring imposing sight that stoked the nerves and fears of the falling troops dropped into his midst.
They were afforded a birds eye view of the titanic fox his form and the features of the city growing larger with each second. Lithe muscles rippled under his suit as the colossal fox lifted his boot over the still bravely standing transamerica pyramid. Higher and Higher the appendage was raised his muscles coiling like a spring. And then it was released.
The skyscraper crumbled instantaneously upon contact with the foxes boot sole. Floors compacted downwards into one another driving the buildings collapse into itself. The unyielding footwear cleaved through nearby High rises on its way down gutting them of there insides. When it contacted the ground it was comparable to a missile strike. Nearby buildings simply exploded into shingles of shrapnel a whirlwind of debris buried streets. The ground ruptured forming jagged cliffs where riads had once been tossing cars into the air fissures opened up underneath buildings causing them to topple. A shockwave of compressed air blew glass from windows and doors off hinges for miles around the quakes caused skyscrapers built to withstand even the largest quakes to fall. A chain reaction of collapse spread out from the foxes stomp leaving only piles of rubble where skyscrapers had stood kicking up plumes of dust choking the sky further.
The fox then grinned his brilliant teal eyes appeared to glow the very air seemed ro resonate a high pitch whistle audible over the howling winds. There was then a blinding flash like a nuke had gone off as two intense beams of teal energy lanced from the foxes eyes streaking across the sky, dispersing clouds and scything into yet untouched sections of city.
Everything in there path was instantly vaporized buildings, streets, subways were reduced to dust. The lasers cut deep into the bedrock leaving it a glassed blackened wasteland anything that was nearby ignited from the heat fires ripped through city districts burning everything to a crisp. Where the fox looked the beams went enormous swathes of city soon ceased to exist, turned to ash in the blink of an eye. Replaced by a featureless scorched valley that removed any evidence of cicivilisation The lasers sliced through buildings like a hot knife through butter decapitating them the top floors crumbling into themselves sliding off the metal and glass stumps and crashing to the ground below, rows upon rows of skyscrapers torched into flaming ruins. the fox etching his mark onto this new planet.
The troops had been captivated by the sight, stunned by the inconceivable display of power, so much so they weren’t paying attention to there surroundings the scorched earth rapidly rushing up to meet them the minimum height they could safely deploy there parachutes fast approaching.
Nor did they see the foxes ears twitch his gaze shifting upwards. To them.
One scream turned to many the soldiers hearing a bassy chuckle vibrate the air they saw the fox grin his eyes flash teal once more staring directly at them.
Then nothing.
