Several minutes passed as the teenage dragon held on for dear life while attempting to listen for cues that would allow her to safely get off of the refrigerated truck. There were a few good opportunities, but her proximity to the roof-mounted speaker that was still playing its impish melody made it difficult to make her escape before the vehicle returned to an unsafe speed to jump off.
“CHIRP-CHIRP!” a voice tweeted that was somehow louder than the music blaring into Takoda’s ears. “CHIRP! CHIRP-CHIRP!”
BZZT
“Huh?” the white-scaled, teenage dragon wondered as the music came to an abrupt stop as the ice cream truck came to an abrupt stop.
“PAPA!” squawked the voice that had managed to pierce through the speaker’s blaring melody. “ICE CLEAN!”
Takoda opened her eyes and moved herself just enough to see that they had stopped in front of a house that appeared familiar to her.
“I’m sorry,” a young man stated. “You take your eyes off them for just a second, right?”
“No worries, sir,” the ice cream man replied without leaving his vehicle. “It is actually my fault for not having turned off the music that these kiddos have come to associate to my arrival in their neighborhood.”
“Ice clean?” a little voice tweeted. “Get ice clean?”
“No, Celeste,” the young man replied. “It’s your naptime and we don’t want you getting all grumpy from not getting enough sleep during the day.”
“How about this?” the vendor suggested. “I’m on my way to restock my truck. However, when you next see me, I want you and your little ladybird to each have a free ice cream on me.”
Takoda had listened enough to now know the vehicle was stopped and was likely to remain stopped long enough for her to make a quick escape.
“Okay,” she said while psyching herself up to leap from atop the truck to somewhere she could hide until she figured out where she was in proximity to her home. “Time to be awesome.”
PUT-TUT
PA-TUT-PA-TUT
SCHLIP
PIFF-PAFF
TIP-TAP-TA-TIP-TIPAP
As the ice cream vendor was focused on the parent and his child, Takoda decided to trust her instincts as she rolled herself to the opposite side of the truck’s roof, drop to middle of the road below, and make a mad dash to the first thing her eyes saw that would provide her cover.

SPLASH
SPLISH-SPLASH
WHISH
Takoda was running on autopilot until finding herself in front of a tall, wooden fence that had a forest-green colored door built into it.
VRUM
The teenage dragon heard the sound of some sort of machine thrumming beyond the latched door.
SPLISH-SPLASH
KER-SPLOOSH
WIP-WIP-WIP-WIP
SPLASH!
“Ah!” a female voice gasped as the sound of something erupting from a body of water was heard.
“Thank, Bahamut,” Takoda sighed with relief upon realizing she had instinctively ran to Kendra’s house. “I’m saved.”
KNOCK-KNOCK-KNOCK
“Huh?” Kendra yipped as her soft-blue colored ear fins rose to better assess where the sudden sound had come from. “Who’s there?”
“It’s me!” replied Takoda from the opposite side of the fence. “Can you throw me a towel?”
SWISH-SWASH
SWASH-SWISH
“A towel?” the fuchsia-scaled dragon wondered while wading towards the ladder that would take her out of the water and onto the wooden deck that encircled the backyard pool. “Did I miss a text from you?”
“No,” Takoda sighed. “I don’t even have my phone on me.”
“SPWISH-ISH
“Kazootles!” Kendra replied as she brought herself out of the water. “You without your phone? Did you get grounded? Did you sneak out of your house? I really don’t think it is a good idea for us to do anything that may get you grounded for the entire summer.”
The white-scaled dragon felt a blush warm her cheeks as she brought her tail up between her legs.
“Can you just toss a towel over the fence to me?” she anxiously insisted. “I’ll explain more after that.”
Kendra went about drying herself off as she grabbed one of her favorite towels from the deck’s built-in towel rack.
“Gee, ‘Kody,” she huffed while walking down the set of stairs that lead towards the backyard fence. “Weren’t you supposed to just chillax this weekend?”
“I’ll chillax after you toss me that towel!” Takoda grumpily replied.
Kendra took the towel she was using and wrapped it over her shoulders.
“The gate is open, you know,” she stated while coming to a stop just short of the tall fence. “You could have just come in and grabbed a towel for yourself.”
Takoda felt her hands squeeze tightly around her tail as she fought to not take her frustrations out on her friend.
“I’m sorry,” she apologized with as much sincerity as she could muster. “Please toss the towel over the fence to me?”
“Alright,” replied Kendra with a shrug of her shoulders. “Here comes!”
FWOOF
Without a second’s thought, Takoda caught the towel and wrapped it around her waist.
“I’m coming in!” she announced while releasing the latched door.
