So, I decided that I wanted to find a new color for my character. Right now with my current reference sheet, he's a periwinkle color. My original reference sheet had him much more just straight blue. So I set out to find tibbit a new palette. My first thought was "I want to make Tibbit's color more realistic." So I found some pictures of real rabbits and sampled their fur color. This led me to come up with two different colors: a fairly unsaturated blue-grey. One lighter and one darker. In the middle I decided to pair the lighter with the darker's stripes, making him more high contrast.
I search for which color most closely got to the one I sampled and found one: Glaucous. Glaucous is "used to describe the pale grey or bluish-green appearance of the surfaces of some plants, as well as in the names of birds... The blue-grey camouflage coloring of some species of animals causes their appearance to blend with their surroundings, making their detection by predators or prey difficult." I thought that was pretty cool that the color sampling of real rabbits led to a color that describes animal camouflage.
However, I then made a collage of various commissions I have received. I selected their color and coerced it into this new color... and I wasn't really a fan of the results. The colors don't 'pop'. They are very muted. While I like the idea of having a realistic bun color, I found out that I don't like the look. So I decided I needed a different approach. I knew I wanted somewhere in the "blue" category, so I make a grid of colors to inspire me to what color I do want in the next post:
