RIP Mikhail Gorbachev
News broke the last leader of the Soviet Union died. And Mikhail wasn't anything like his predecessors. He forged an arms reduction deal with Ronald Reagan, reducing nuclear weapons and opened up the Soviet Union. Doing Glasnost and perestrioka (Openess and reconstruction, literally unthinkable criticism of the party.) He also proved himself by NOT sending in the Soviet Troops when the Berlin Wall fell, but stayed out, allowing the Germans to reunite. His actions earned him a Nobel Peace Prize in 1990. When Reagan died, Gorby attended his funeral, sadly couldn't attend Margarete Thatcher's funeral due to poor health, but openly said he wanted to attend to honor her.
The Soviet Hardliners tried a military coup attempt to seize control from Gorbachev in August 21/22 1991. They were upset at Gorbechev's reform programs and their loss of control over the Former Soviet states. The attack failed after 2 days and Boris Yeltsin was the new leader as Gorbachev lost much of his influence . But the failed Coup lead to the collapse of the Soviet Union and it dessolved 2 months later.
Sadly Gorbachev lived to see Putin ruin Russia in his attempt to bring back the glory of the former Soviet Union. Gorbachev's Biographer, William Taubman said it best "He was a decent man. I think his tragedy is in a sense that he was too decent for the country he was leading."
Gorby was a man even I admired, he wanted what would be best for his people, and he succeeded.

He was still in charge when I was in the Corps., and we were trained/indoctrinated to hate/detest the 'Evil Red Menace/Russians' straight outta BOOT. I knew the rhetoric for what it was (I'm from a mixed heritage, Irish and Cherokee, and that sort of propaganda is hardly unknown to me), and realized hating anyone/anything w/o justification/good cause was just stupid.
Seeing all the things that have been going on in our world is frankly: amazing. Some good, many bad, but damned if stuff isn't always happening/changing.
I marched with Chavez during the Migrant Workers era, and would've been happy to do the same with MLK, but that was a tad before my time (just a kid).
Seeing the Berlin Wall come down, and then the collapse of the U.S.S.R., and how it/its States reformed was amazing.
Sadly, humanity just doesn't remember or even bother learning the harsh lessons of the past, esp. if it involved violent conflict.
I greatly fear what's coming, across all fronts. Not just here in America, but worldwide.
R.I.P. Mr. Gorbechev.

I never knew who he was until now, when I heard he died I didn't know or realize how significant his death was. For that I feel so sad and sorry for him. He was a decent man and arguably one of if not Russia's most decent leaders. With him gone and that tyrant still destroying everything he had achieved, today Russia has lost another piece of its Soul and I mourn for the innocents who have to suffer now, and mourn his passing, and mourn that he died seeing his beloved country get dragged into hell and everything he did undone.
He will be missed but never forgotten resting well forever in peace. I hope someday, Russia can be saved and restored back to what he dedicated his entire life to making.

I hear Gorby's representative sent to Oslo to accept that Nobel Peace Prize hitched a ride on the tanks that were rolling over the Baltic states at the time.
I understand that you do memorials even for people who aren't "nice", and I'm not going to tell you who you should/shouldn't memorialize, but he never wanted to end Communism, he just wanted to reform it and continue. From the speaking tours he did after the USSR broke up he still supported the sociopolitical system built on the writings of that couch-surfing German asshole Marx, which was ultimately responsible for over 100 million deaths.

yes and no , personal i sugest you learn about his history rather then pass what you been told , and he was no saint but a lot his decisions were cencious , propobly most important one was pull most soviet troops from all eastern block countries who was directly ageinst brezniev doctrine. this was concious decision and he knew "time of soviet republic is ending" if he have not done it we would have , represions , and wars with hundrets of thousants dead in all soviet republics , like Poland , Latvia , estonia etc
he also denied any interventions during "undrest" when said "people in said countries rose for their freedom" and berlin wall too
there is hl1 quote who alweys resonated with me on him that right man in the wrong place can make all the diffrance in world.
he also began nuclear disarment. and many other things , https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mikhail_Gorbachev
and this comes from somone who hated soviet union , and i briefly "lived" in time my country was soviet republic under burden , my birthsday is also aniversary of "Martial Law" when my country rose to freedom and rulers of the republic scrambled to keep in power.
he was not perfect but i dont think any other person who would be elected leader would "loosen up anything" , just look what happened in china or korea when power was passed.

Oh you Poles successfully pissed off the Soviets with Lech Walesa and the Solidarity movement, plus having Pope John Paul come in as the Polish Pope. Lotsa teeth nashing east towards Moscow.
Plus many Poles didn't forget the Soviets marching in from the East in September 1939 while Hitler was popping in from the west. AND how the Soviet army massacred the Polish officers in 1939 in the Katyn Forest. And add how the Soviets watched at the Germans leveled Warsaw in 1944 while sitting across the river doing nothing to aid the Polish Resistance.

I...honestly thought Mr Gorbachev died years ago, that explains the sudden flooding of his image on Reddit
I'm honestly surprised and feel a little guilty for not realizing that. He was a good man, a man with a vision for peace.
Thank you, Tom. I probably would have been 3-4 more days with zero clue if you hadn't made this

I suppose the only positive thing that can be said about his death is that Gorbachev won't be around to see how much worse things in Russia can get, because I think that until Putin and his cronies are out of power, things sure as Hell aren't going to get any better. :(
He was also living proof of the old Biblical saw that a prophet is despised in his own Nation...

I wish I understand the whole situation Mr. Gorbachev was in to have my say. At least I can say he was doing what he could for the Russians.
Plus, he is one heck of a dancer... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iplTFpgX0h4

it is also worth noting that in 1987 he pulled most/almost all soviet troops from "soviet pupet states/republic countries" becouse he knew goverments in there will ask soviet union when sooner or later these countries will rise for freedom , this was very unpopular decision in soviet union ageinst other leaders below him and went directly ageinst Brezhnev Doctrine who was considered "holy" in soviet union
there is saying from half life that "right man at the wrong place can make all the difference in world" and while he was not saint , compared to what any other soviet leader could do and would do in his position , we would have soviet union soldiers moving down protesters and civilians in all soviet republic when they reached for freedom.

I lived as a child through that decade and I feel as if we had the greatest leaders of the 20th century then. If not for Regan, Gorbachev, Thatcher we would not have seen the end to the cold war. While they all had their controversial moments (who doesn't as a world leader) its noted for all of history, those leaders and their accomplishments together. We also had Pope John Paul II and Mother Teresa as moral leaders who had their own accomplishments. Its hard to watch all these figures from the 80's pass on knowing they were not afraid to take the bold steps needed to better all of mankind.
RIP Mr Gorbachev and tear down those pearly gates.

Another icon gone.
I'll never forget that Pizza Hut commercial he did. Funny stuff.
But seriously. Guy tried to bring upon good change, and that's all that counts.
For any flaws he may have had during the Cold War, its nothing compared to the current president.
Farewell Comrade.
