3pm was feed and talk time at Penguin Coast and a group of the African Penguins gathered to watch for the arrival of green-shirted keepers with fish!
Also known as Black Footed Penguins of Jackass Penguins these water birds are native to the coasts of South Africa and Namibia. Numbers are estimated to have fallen by 97.5% since 1900 and Bristol Zoo has supported conservation, rescue and chick rearing efforts in South Africa for many years.
African penguins adapt well to the European environment and breed readily, providing a captive gene bank for the species. The EAZA European breeding programme is managed by Artis Royal Zoo in Amsterdam, a zoo established in 1838, 2 years after Bristol Zoo opened.
