My fursona's long estranged father.
Born on December 15, 1952, he was the first child to Robert "Gordon" Barion and Ethel Barion.
Graduating from Newark HS in June 1970, he went to work for NASA at just nineteen in December 1971, being placed on the groundbreaking Pioneer 10 program, which became the first spacecraft to fly-by Jupiter in December 1973.
Later taking part in the Voyager program in the 1980's, Ray was critically injured in 1985 when he was nearly crushed by a collapsing communications satellite being installed in Space Shuttle Challenger. Horribly burned by the corrosive hydrazine propellent, he was badly scarred and nearly blinded, his blue eyes turning a dull shade of gray.
The Accident changed him into a unloving father, largely destroying his own family after throwing out his own son after he was outed as gay by the High School counselor.
Growing mellow when he heard his son nearly died in a gay bashing, and his ex-wife died in 2000, Ray mellowed out and hid away, not sure how to recontact his two estranged sons, both having much anger at the father that essentially left them.
Eventually mustering the courage to see his son again, he ended up being cussed out and abandoned by the same people he helped create, breaking his heart that was so desperately begging for love and redemption.
However Ray, who befriended a gay man saw his new and only friend being beat up by a group of homophobic thugs, could stand no more at the sight of the only man who ever showed him friendship being beaten to death made him snap, and with the cost of his life...threw one of the attackers to his death off the bridge, but not before being fatally shot five times in the chest and abdomen.
Acknowledging that there was good still left in him, Ray died in his friend's arms, smiling to the end that he did something good, and finally receiving his son's acceptance, posthumously. He was fifty-seven when he died.
This picture of him was taken before he died, a picture for his ID card for his office job he worked at.
