Happy Birthday, Y-Man!
It's pretty cool that our birthdays fall on the 18th, four months though years apart.
Today is a very good friend of mine's 24th birthday, YoshiMan. Having known him since around...it's been awhile, few years since our NSider days, and after all the undeserved kindness and generosity he's bestowed upon me, it was time for me to pay him back in some way. And what better way, than a birthday gift? He did reach out to me, after all, and that's how our friendship began...
...This artwork is actually a bit old. I had started this the night before or night of his birthday last year while drawing myself looking in the mirror wearing a hat. That's what the pose is referenced off of. I hadn't intended to upload this today...considering I had still been working on it earlier this year around the springtime and put it off again for a few months; it wasn't finished until now.
It's not the best rendition of him, but it's my first fully-fleshed out picture of Y-Man and my second time drawing him (first time was a cruddy doodle...though I've tried drawing him before and needless to say I'm not the best at drawing Yoshis). Also had a bit difficulty with the shading, and trying to convert his jersey's design to the pose he was in, so...it might look slightly off besides just the anatomy. Usually I like to be given creative licensing with a character, but with Y-Man, nothing major is played around with. The only few things that are slightly different are the addition of nostrils (he didn't look right in my style without 'em), five fingers on each hand instead of the usual four, and his had is turned to the front instead of sideways like usual because again, his pose was referenced off myself while I was sketching standing up wearing a hat. Hope he doesn't mind those few changes.
Every single element and design piece in the background was created by hand from scratch (aside from the clouds, and the grass, which are brushes credited to other artists). No sprites whatsoever. I had to look at some sprites and old in-game screenshots for ideas, but yeah, everything was all digitally rendered in MS Paint and GIMP from scratch. The blocks, the hills, the warp pipe, the fence, even the little Mushroom. Had to create the individual portions in their entirety, then assemble them all into the background. Also had to consistently zoom in and actually edit areas pixel by pixel, so needless to say it was exhausting despite how crudtastic this looks. Once that was done, the character render of Y-Man was pasted on top, and I went from there.
It took a long time, between then and now to finish, but at least it's finally done. Sorry for the belatedness of this, by a whole year actually since this should've been done last year. But since today is Y-Man's birthday and after all the times of constantly mentioning this picture did indeed exist, it was a good time to finally complete it.
Y-Man's not exactly a photographer himself nor into photography, but I was holding a camera at the time, so yeah...the Kodak camera he's holding is modeled after my very own. And in a way, his artwork speaks a thousand words and then some and brings his viewers to awesome places...so, that could also be another way of looking at it. The background is the Mushroom Kingdom at starry sunset with a few fireflies flying about, simple as that.
Can someone say...Kodak moment?
Lame pun aside, Happy Birthday Y-Man dude. You deserve so much more than just this junky piece of failure suckage, but...really hoping that somehow, you'll enjoy this anyway. You've been such an indescribably wonderful friend, our friendship means a lot to me and it's an honor to be considered a friend of yours. I'm thankful for every day that we've been friends and that I've gotten to know you and talk to you. Hope you enjoy your special day today; make it count.
Hope you all enjoy too...or not...
