Some background on this one, Timothy is now a teen. He is training with his ex-military neighbor because his family keeps on being attacked.
............
Timothy got up, kissed Sarah goodbye on her cheek, and walked out with Randy to the
treed area. When they reach the tree line, Randy told Timothy the plan for the day.
“For today, all I want you to do is to follow the tracks I made out hear all ready. The only
rules are, no obvious transformations. Other than that, you can use your since of smell and
hearing to track me. I’ll head out and after five minutes, you try to track me. Now remember,
look at everything. Look for footprints, broken limbs, anything that will tell you when I went.”
Randy said before making Timothy turn around and close his eyes.
After about five minutes, Timothy opens his eyes and looked around. Of course, Randy
was nowhere to be found. Timothy started sniffing the air to try to find is scent. What was
surprising was he couldn't find Randy’s scent anywhere. So, he started looking over the ground
for any disturbed dirt, twigs and leaves. He found what looked to be a partial footprint in
decided to start following it. He grew his ears slightly to a point to where he could hear better,
but they were not overly obvious to anyone looking at him, especially at a distance. He could
hear some footsteps in the direction that he was facing. He decided to follow slowly, keeping
his head on a swivel, looking out for Randy. Timothy still remembered the day before where he
was basically beaten up by the old man, which made him very cautious in his movements.
Timothy continued on until fining some broken branches several yards into the trees.
The branches indicated a change of direction from where he's been going. Once again, Timothy
tries to sniff the air for a scent but was unable to find the scent of Randy. Timothy doubles
check the tracks before deciding to move forward in the new direction. Moving in this new
direction, he came upon more footprints that look to be Randy’s. Timothy now felt he was very
confident that he was heading in the right direction. He kept his ears pointed, listening for any
movement as he cautiously moved through the trees. He could hear the wind blow all around
him, moving the tree branches. It was still very difficult for Timothy to distinguish footsteps
from the movement of the tree branches. Moving forward more, he came upon what looked
like a rocked that was stepped on and slid over. He got close the rock to try to see if you could
get a scent off of it. While he still didn’t find Randy’s scent, he did smell something else. He
could smell the rubber to Randy’s boots.
Timothy didn’t think of it before, but a thought came to his mind. What if Randy was
using something to cover his scent. If that was true, trying to track Randy wouldn’t work, but if
he tracked something randy had on him that the scent wasn’t as easy to cover, such as rubber,
then he could smell for that. Timothy closed his eyes and sniffed the air. He was now searching
for rubber specifically. As if a light shined in a dark room, the scent of rubber lit up Timothy’s
nose. He now had something he could track easily. Taking in deep breaths, Timothy moved
quicker through the tree. The scent of rubber got stronger as he went. He kept his ears out,
listening for any movements.
Then he heard it, a twig snap. It was close by. Timothy slowed down. He had covered a
lot of ground in a short time, and he believed he caught up to Randy. Timothy moved slowly,
listening and still sniffing. He could feel he was close. He was right. He could hear breathing.
Randy’s, maybe. He moved as quietly as he could. Then there he was, Randy slowly walking in
front of him. Timothy knew if he made a noise, Randy would run off. So, he moved stealthily
through the trees. Inching ever closer to his target. Randy, being the expert that he was,
stopped and looked around. Their eyes meet. In the brief moment they looked at each other,
Timothy jump and ran towards Randy. Randy raised up his hand to motion for Timothy to stop.
“Good job. That’s enough for today.” Randy said.
Out of breath from his sprint, Timothy replied. “I can’t believe I found you. I couldn’t
smell you or hear you at first.” Timothy then reverted his pointed ears back to normal.
“There’s a good reason. I used a scent remover just before picking you up. Also, I use to
do this for a living. A middle-schooler is nothing like a trained killer. With that said, I am
impressed that you found me so quickly. I was planning to walk around, back to the starting
point, but you caught up to soon.” Randy states.
“Well, I followed the smell of your boots. After finding that, it was easy to listen for
you.” Timothy smiles.
“My boots! Oh, the scent concealer bust have worn off the bottoms of my boots. That
was a good catch. Not something I came up against before. I’ve avoided hunting dogs before,
but they didn’t have your mind or intuition. You could just become the best tracker in the world
if you keep this up.” Randy praises.
“As long as it helps protect my family, then that is what I’ll do.” Timothy replied.
