UA-XX77
This anomaly was discovered accidentally, following the acquisition of a suspected anomalous artifact from a stage theatre in southern France. It was not until subsequent testing that its connection with the entity, henceforth designated as UA-XX77, was uncovered.
When not in use, the artifact is to remain in a secure object storage locker on-site, and only removed during approved testing. For testing and interviews, it is to be placed in a modified standard containment chamber, with a single electrical outlet and a copper speaking tube installed in one wall. Additionally, there is to be at least one bookshelf containing works of fiction, poetry, or art, with all items either being previously owned or produced by site personnel or family members.
The recovered object is a 1.8-meter-tall industrial free-standing theatre stage floor lamp with a fixed tripod base, manufactured during the 1920’s. A closer physical examination revealed a burned silver Greek drachm, circa 400 BC, hidden at the bottom of the secondary glass casing and held with a strip of adhesive tape. Aside from minor damage associated with age, the lamp operates and functions as a normal electrical light fixture. Initial experimentation with the lamp placed in a standard testing chamber yielded no anomalous results, aside from what was described as an increase in creative focus in individuals within its area of light. However, when placed within a “creative space” such as a theatre, library, or art studio (see Incident B-44-5), should it be turned on after sundown local time, the light produced will manifest the anomalous entity.
UA-XX77 is a fully sapient non-biological entity of unknown origin. It is fully corporeal within the area affected by the lamp while it remains lit, or until sunrise. Physical examinations have so far yielded inconclusive results regarding its physiology and composition, aside from it being described as feeling mostly organic to the touch, and having a scent very similar to Earl Grey tea. It has shown a familiarity with every language spoken to it thus far during testing, including several archaic dialects. While it is present, individuals within the light radius will display higher levels of creative thought and problem-solving abilities, along with heightened emotions. Compulsive behaviors and lowered inhibitions have also been noted. When removed from the anomaly’s area of effect, individuals will frequently express feelings of being “incomplete,” often displaying symptoms of severe depression and a strong desire to return. The use of amnestics can be used to alleviate this effect.
The entity itself will regularly interact with any humans present upon its manifestation, and will adopt the language spoken to it for the duration. Its demeanor has been described as playful and “theatrical,” regardless of the subject of conversation. In some cases, it will display an intimate knowledge of the personal experiences of the individual (or individuals) within its area, with a theorized correlation between the level of creativity possessed by said individual and the level of knowledge it possesses regarding them. Occasionally, it will perform verses of unknown poetry or song. Should this occur, there is a fifty-six percent chance that any human under its effects will experience an urge to join in, as per a dialogue or duet, along with the sudden knowledge of the appropriate words and/or melody. Following the de-manifestation of the anomaly, such individuals will have the compulsion to recreate what they have heard, or create related works. In rare instances, the entity may target a specific individual within its proximity, and spontaneously relocate them to an as-of-yet undetermined location, additionally de-manifesting as part of the event until the following sundown, or until the artifact is utilized again. The criteria for such an event occurring are still unknown, and no individuals transported in such a manner have been recovered.
Attempts to observe, record, or otherwise communicate with the entity via electronic devices have so proven unreliable. UA-XX77 will not appear on digital cameras, and any digital audio recordings will produce indecipherable static. Attempts using non-digital cameras and audio devices have had mixed success, producing visual light anomalies or a faint yet constant humming. The current method of communication for the purpose of interviewing the entity consists of a simple copper speaking tube connecting the lamp chamber to an adjacent room, the tube possessing several angles along its length so as to avoid light exposure. Conversations are recorded using both a film cassette and assisted written transcription.
Under no circumstances are site staff to enter the vicinity of UA-XX77 while it is manifested. All employees must empty their pockets whenever interacting with the artifact, regardless of its activation status (see Incident B-44-5).
Incident B-44-5 Notes:
It was discovered that the manifestation of UA-XX77 would not occur should the drachm be removed from the lamp. This in turn led to the discovery of this coin being the primary source of the anomaly. Should it be placed inside any light source utilized in a place of creativity, regardless of the type of light, the entity will manifest.
During an experiment carried out by junior site researcher Dr. Mathis, the coin was placed inside the light chamber of a flashlight. While testing device functionality, the light produced resulted in the entity’s manifestation, despite taking place in a standard testing chamber. Mathis, holding the light source, held an unknown exchange with the entity before it offered its hand. Presumably under the anomaly’s effects, he then touched the hand being offered, causing him to spontaneously disappear, leaving the flashlight behind. The entity likewise vanished, and did not appear again until the coin was reinstated in an appropriate location.
It was later discovered that Mathis had regularly left small sketches and doodles in the margins of his notebooks, and it was surmised that one may have been in his pocket during the experiment, fulfilling the artifact’s criteria for a space in which creativity occurs.
Since this event, the coin is to remain inside the original stage lamp, with all further tests and interviews requiring approval from site management.
The following excerpt is from an interview carried out by Dr. Summers, following Incident B-44-5.
Summers: I would like to ask you about Dr. Mathis.
UA-XX77: He is a gentleman of more delicate sensibilities, young and clever, ever considerate of his fellow man. A small, pale flower amidst the sand. I am quite fond of him…
Summers: Is that why you took him?
UA-XX77: Took him? You offend me, my dear Summers – I would never take a man against his will. I extended an invitation, and he accepted.
Summers: An invitation to what? To where?
UA-XX77: Dear Mathis has a curious and open heart, and who am I to deny water to a man in the desert, when his soul is so clearly desperate? I invited him to shelter where the thirst in his spirit might be quenched.
Summers: Could you be more specific?
UA-XX77: Might you be more specific in your own requests, good Summers?
Summers: Please answer the question.
UA-XX77: Which one?
Summers: Where is Mathis?
UA-XX77: Where else, but with me? And before you ask, no. It’s impolite, asking someone where they live before you haven’t even danced with them.
Summers: Could you please return him, then?
UA-XX77: Much more polite a question, but I’m afraid I must deny your request. You see, while I could send him back to you, I will not. As I say, I will never take a man against his will. It is his choice.
Summers: You’re saying he could come back on his own?
UA-XX77: Correct you are, dear Summers. You see, Mathis does not want to return.
(As always, let me know what you think!)
