Shayl was known as a hard-headed girl even before becoming a mage. She got an education through sheer persistence and boldness in pestering high-ranking wizards to teach her. Two of them soon realized she had a talent for spellcraft and began using her as an apprentice. One of these mentors had much worse motives.
Shayl's specialty is earth magic, using crystals and stones. Though she has a few combat abilities to let her play at adventuring, her real skill is with the patient creation and shaping of rock. Oh sure, being able to fling gravel at some bandit's head is handy. But she'd rather build several stone houses in a day and befriend a whole village with them. A good paved road lasts longer than a headache.
She often notes that walls and roads are almost the same thing, and the power of them is in what's encouraged and what's discouraged. Learn where they're built and why, she says, and you get a lot of insight into a society.

Thanks! I've seen several tabletop RPGs recently where there's some power to reshape stone on a big scale, and I want to write something about a character who can do that. It could be this character in a new setting. Or someone in the "Wavebound" setting where there's already a water expert who specialized in non-combat powers.
