When the Sakura petals fall like snow over the
babbling rivers, when the sparrow sings her
first song to welcome the tidings of spring,
when the kodama rise from their sleep and fill
the trees with fresh emerald blades, you will
hear her singing just beyond the torii. Dressed
in her vernal pink kimono she plays among the
beasts that hide far beyond the eyes of mortal
men. If you hear her obijime’s bell, lay a sakura-
mochi before a stone and recite a prayer.
Perhaps you will hear her laughter from that
realm of kemono people. Sing the song of the
tanuki and perhaps she will play along with
you. Offer sake before the torii and maybe
she’ll appear and dance with you. But you can
never follow her to that golden realm where no
man may enter.
