The world was quiet, too, save for a distant, low rumble, and he couldn't see anything moving save for a slow dance of ghostly green pillars along the horizon. But sounds filtered through the open doorways: rustling leaves, distant cars and carriages, the din of nails and jackhammers down the block. Footfalls that might be coming for them. Restrained by his immense paw, firm yet gentle, Maltis merely sputtered in awestruck excitement.

Their benefactress tutted. "I know more than you might imagine. And since we're already here, I hope you won't mind if we make another use of my all-access pass..."
