Woke up this morning and Loki had left me a beautiful shed! It measured 4ft exactly! Now hes all soft and cuddly. =3
I think this is the first detailed picture I have of him! This one was taken with my actual CAMERA instead of my iPhone. >.>
I like it. x]
I still don't know if Loki is M or F. x.x I REALLY want to know! but I called a local vet who worked with "exotics" and they told me it would be $80 to have him probed... Fuck That! I can look between any other animals legs and tell for FREEEEEE. Total bullshit. I'll just call him a he for forever until he grows up big and strong and make an estimate on his gender based on length. My luck he will probably get avg length between the genders and I will be stumped. lol Go figure.

Beautiful snake!
Usually if the snake is old enough you can tell if it's a male or not pretty reliably by the presence of spurs near the cloaca/vent. The spurs will look like little spikes on either side of the vent. If there are none, it's a girl, if it has a pair, it's a boy!

Hope that helps!

He does have those, but I've heard that BOTH male AND female have the spurs, but that they are just larger on the male. His (hers?) are teeeeeennnnyyyy tiiinnnnyyyyy. You gotta squint to see them. lol But Ive heard that some males have small spurs too. And I dont have anything to compare it to... so... @_@
The males don't have that small of spurs when they are 'small'. Males can have up to 1" spurs but usually not anywhere near that long. If you can easily see them, you can be pretty certain it's a male. The females are really just indents where the spurs should be. I should take pics of our girls n boys and show them side by side.
I'm sure youtube will have some good vids too, try looking through there for some side by side comparisons.

Looks like a girl. My partner came over and looked too, her opinion is female too.
Can't be 100% of course but I'd say like 95% sure...female.
Even when they probe they can't be 100% sure, if the male clenches up he'll feel like a female. So visual inspection at that stage/size is just as effective as probing.
Feel free to read up on redtailboas.net or any other big forums to verify that too. Lots of threads on sexing boas with lots of pics.

Oh I didnt know probing wasn't 100% accurate. o.o
I have definitely read up on red tails. I wouldnt have a pet without doing my homework! I try to eliminate the "ignorant owner" population. ^^ I had been suspecting he was a she, lol but I just feel like my amateur opinion sucks. lol I never had anything to compare to and Ive never had him in the presence of an expert. But knowing that you breed, and you and your mate both checked (her) out, I feel more secure in my opinion! =3 Thanks!

I didn't either (about the probing) until my partner told me. LOL I am not an expert, she's far more knowledgeable than I am (she's the expert). I'm more of a general biologist. It is far easier to sex them when you have males and females on hand to compare too. Also we bought ours at reptile shows and the breeders were there to show how to sex them (also learned how to feel for the hemipenes in colubrids and such). Large shows with lots of reputable breeders in them are wealth of info. The forums are great too, just takes lots of time and reading.
Good luck with her! :D You're welcome!
