(Vent art + essay) Comfort Characters
I... I love the lake trio, but, I have the feeling that despite coming from such a big franchise and having a big role in their world, they don't get enough love.
Some days ago that feeling affected me and I wasn't feeling as active as in other days. I made them a big part of my life, but, at the same time, I picked characters that don't get drawn often, or don't get enough screentime. I have been brought down to my knees, not in real life, I mean in this picture, since I wanted to reflect how I felt that day before the homeostasis made me feel okay again, I wanted to keep that emotion framed in a pic for people to see like if it was lightning in a bottle.
I am a Psych Major, and one of the factors that made me pick that destiny were the lake trio, who are like mascots to psychology, and at the same time muses, or even role models in some ways. As for the mascots part, I think this way, because they motivated me to study, like how mascots in food motivate children to eat. Socrates on book II of the Republic recommended that the leaders, or guardians on his ideal city state would read poems where deities were doing only good things, since they would be role models to them. I believe that the lake trio reflects this Socratic idea of the benevolent deity that can be followed as a role model, because they are so virtuous at psychology that... as I said before, they designed and made the minds of people in their own world. As of now I've been getting good grades, and I feel inspired by them to go forward, I feel optimistic about my future. When I am successful at my career, I feel like I'm honoring them, and they do have a cute aspect to them, a beautiful one, they give me positive stimuli, that make me keep going.
Now, then, why did I feel upset lately? In my own perspective, the lake trio is not that popular. They do come from the Pokemon franchise, where I see other characters like gardevoir and lucario getting love every single day, with art, and people talking about them. I'm glad for those who can get to see art and love of their loved characters as well, since these are their own positive stimuli. But, I am in a different situation because of my comfort characters being the lake trio. Here on this site, as of now, uxie and mesprit have less than a thousand pics, with azelf having at least a bit more than a thousand. Meanwhile, gardevoir has 24 thousand pics, and lucario has 84 thousand. I don't get to see the lake trio so much when it comes to what other people do, so it feels more like I'm on my own, that's fine... it's just that since people barely talk about the lake trio, make art of the lake trio, or have lake guardian sonas to which I can interact with, I don't get as much positive stimuli that others do, I have to make them myself with my own resources to guarantee that.
I've seen people call the lake trio ugly, I've seen them say "well, they all have the same type" (which I don't really care about, since I care more about world building than the game mechanics in pokemon), I've heard people say "they are uncreative since they all have the same bodies except for the heads, and are similar to mew". I feel like they are not only ignored, but, even sometimes disliked, maybe the pokemon franchise wasn't the correct place to have them on, since most of the people there will expect other kinds of things.
Well, I think I know the reasons why the two pokemon I picked as examples of popular pokemon. Lucario got its popularity from screentime, it was on smash since brawl, and also had a movie, that allowed lucario to show how cool it was (positive stimuli) during all that time screentime, and with more screentime, lucario proved to give more positive stimuli onto people, therefore becoming popular. Gardevoir... I don't understand gardevoir too much, maybe it is because it is similar to a human, that it gives the friendliness that one gives, therefore, that told people it gives positive stimuli. So, these are the methods that make pokemon popular in the first place, being able to show the feats, the wonders they can do, through screentime or by word of mouth.
Since I don't want to feel helpless, and I need to prove I have to solve this situation to feel better rather than weak, I am thinking of how to solve it. I wanna make hope for the future of the lake trio. Since I said that when a character can show the wonders and amazing things they can do, I think that if I did the same for the lake trio, they would also get more love. I'd love to see the day where I would wake up and have friends with lake guardian sonas chatting with me and doing fun stuff with me, and I would get on the internet and see art of them doing things, like eating ice cream (I did see a pic of azelf doing that some weeks ago) or other stuff. I'd love to see love for the mascots of my own field, psychology.
Since I am proposing this to myself, I think I could make the lake trio evolve (not in the pokemon way) into something beyond their source material. I wanna take their archetypes and make characters that have the charm of them. I want these three characters to have versions of them outside the source material and also many characters inspired by them, so they can be enjoyed by people that aren't familiar with them. Another good thing I find in that is that when I take them out of their source material, I can take off any artistic limitations. I can write stories where they are the main characters, or the focus of the story. I can make them look appealing to people who didn't like the original. The best thing of all, is that I can change lore limitations so they can be able to do more things, and therefore, allow them to show their ability to give positive stimuli to people, and hence, reach a point where they are celebrated like other characters, and there would be admiration for them every day. I'd be so happy to see that, I hope I can achieve it! You can help too if you want to!
