More than a study it was someone telling me Puijila darwini (most primitive and old seal ever discovered) and otters were the same animals and paleontologists were making stuff up. Had to explain them about convergent evolution and why Puijila was a different animal from an otter.
Main differences are the skull size, puijila's skull was stockier and shorter, like a seal's.
The eyes, Puijila had bigger eyes, probably for murkier waters and dark winters (it lived in the Canadian arctic in the early Miocene)
