How many of you were alive in 1978? I bet many of you weren't, though I know enough old codgers who are going to jump on me because *they* are even older. But for most of you, going on 71 is old enough for an artist such as myself, who has been grubbing for money even well before 1978. I was landed a job by a book store owner who specialized in SF, young adult and fantasy. I'd known Anne for a few years and she was also the host of monthly parties at her flat for a couple of years. Times changed, however. Anne went out of business and moved back to her family, after which I lost track of her. But she did commission a number of pieces over the years, including this one. You may notice a resemblance to another piece, that I posted about 15 images ago. The resemblance is deliberate. For whatever reason, I re-visited the idea back in the 1980s, even though the second time was not intended as a business card. In fact, I did the work twice, giving the initial version to a friend (who I've lost sight of due to time and other factors).

Wow now THAT brings back memories. Horrible memories of trying to put that stuff down on what you want and NOT all over yourself and everything EXCEPT the intended art work!!
You always impressed me with your ability to use it, though I personally liked the rubdown version since it was easier to control and had more textures other than just dots. Very nicely done!

I was alive! I went to see The Cat from Outer Space at a cinema which has since been demolished.

A few other highlights from 1978, for those old enough to remember (and for those who aren't):
The movies Animal House, The Deer Hunter, Superman and Watership Down.
ABBA release the song Take a Chance on Me.
Debut of the Space Invaders arcade game and the Garfield comic strip (with Garfield originally looking a little different, walking about on all fours).
With VHS and Betamax already released, the first laserdiscs go on sale, under the name 'DiscoVision'.
In the comics Marvel Premiere #45 and #46, Marvel's 'Man-Wolf' character (John Jameson) becomes no longer a savage lycanthrope, but an honest-to-goodness werewolf superhero.

If you've been to 1600 Bloor street west to visit the store, you would have been dismayed to see that the sign said, "Joseph Patrick Books -- specializing in theology and Catholic reading." Not that exactly, but JPB it definitely said, and it did specialize in Catholic theology. Anne was the owners daughter, and she lived upstairs. Her "bookstore" was run out of the basement and didn't have any advertising on the JPB window. It was right across from High Park, if you know the area, and not more than a mile-and-a-half from where I live.
Not that I recall. Head shops in Toronto in 1978 would be quite uncommon, and not likely go unnoticed. Downtown, maybe, but this was a very prosaic shopping district. All I remember was a convenience store on a corner not far away, called Scottie's. And of course, High Park, which was the entire south side of the street for blocks and blocks. The Bloor West/Dundas subway station was a five or ten minute walk from the bookstore.
In 1978 I began work at a council office, where my duties included allocating monthly housing rates payments to properties.
Unfortunately, I hadn't quite grasped the fact that the first payment or payments were supposed to be allocated to the properties' associated garages. This ultimately resulted in several homeowners getting erroneous non-payment notices, and the truncation of my council career.
I should probably send this story to Not Always Working...
