My current angle on kid Sabina is that her preferred form is different than the form she chooses to present to the outside world. Trying to explore a character who doesn't want to reveal things about herself, and not because she thinks people will think less of her - just because she doesn't want to. Goodness knows her mom's got things she doesn't talk about as well.
