Below is an excerpt from the first chapter of my book, Long Division Book II: The Storm.
“Where the Heart Is” is a prologue that reintroduces Marco to my audience. From age four, this lynx and my bear Roy were best friends. They eventually became lovers and life partners. Coming from a wealthy, but dysfunctional family, not all is happy in Marco’s world.

August 1931
“Go, Marco! Go! Go! Yeah!” Roy cheered as his best friend touched the wall of the swimming pool, a good body length ahead of his nearest competitor. Roy glanced quickly across the pool, where there were few chairs and even fewer spectators. His parents were on their feet, clapping and cheering for Marco.
The lynx made his way over to the ladder. He ascended and was instantly surrounded by his coach and teammates. At last, he made his way over to his best friend. Marco was still panting from the exertion as he threw his arms around the big bear. “I can’t believe it! I really took first place!”
“You did!” said Roy. “I knew you’d do it! Marco, that was spectacular!”
Marco looked over to Mr. and Mrs. Carrara and waved.
Later, after the final event had been completed and medals were handed out to all the winners, Marco and Roy walked out of the school building with their arms draped over each other’s shoulders. Roy’s parents stood waiting outside by Eddie’s green Model A.
“There’s my Marco!” beamed Oria as she wrapped the lynx in a motherly embrace. “I’m so proud of you!”
“Me too,” asserted Eddie. “Come on, boys. We’re celebrating tonight. Hamburgers and milkshakes!”
As Marco climbed into the back seat of the car, the smile that had been on his face faded a little. He thought that he’d gotten used to his own parents’ absence at his swim meets. But he couldn’t help wishing that they’d been here tonight.
