I would go with a quarter horse. Deff do 5-7 years old for your first. 3 is way young unless you have a good trainer and riding them at that age to much is never good cause their knees have not locked and they can get leg problems and that is a bitch to deal with. Trust me I know way to well. Taller is good, but make sure you look at body too. Muscles make a nice sturdy QH. And make sure they feet are not too small. Small feet with a big body can make a lame horse in time. I know you will look around with your GF, but if you need a second opinion when shopping I will gladly come with you guys! I hope in that time I will be able to do some horse shopping of my own.
