Die wachsamen Augen der Stadt
Another excerpt from the manuscript "Unsere auf den Kopf gestellte Welt".
Seeing as mining collapses and accidental breakthroughs into a tunnel packed with "die angeber" is an off and on occasion, gatekeepers are a must for all of the main junctions of the city, as well as any side-tunnels and entrances to mining areas. Each of these guards is stationed at a post connected to a door made of reinforced wood and steel. Whenever a breach is detected by these guards they pull a string connected to a series of bells in a "main relay station" of sorts. Once this bell is sounded the guard grabs their weapon, often improvised, an heirloom, or whatever they could snatch from the armory, and rush to shut the heavily reinforced sliding door to their part of the city.
Their weapon is a last resort, as if they're good at their job then there will be no need for fighting; a massive reinforced gate will sit between them and "die angeber". As soon as the bell is sounded a dispatcher rushes to another set of bells, signalling the nearest set of stationed soldiers. This group of militiamen is sent in orderly but quick fashion to the gate, where they will attempt to repel the attack, hopefully culling the force without a hitch.
Due to the time sensitive nature of their job, as well as the strength required to pull the door and the focus and willpower required to not slack, drink, or otherwise screw about on the job; gatekeepers are known as the best of the best in the town, and are highly respected by those who pay attention to the quiet attentive nature of these men.
A gatekeeper must know every sector, every tunnel, every home, every bell and every gatepost in the entire city of Seltersachen. They are only given the basic elements of a soldier's uniform, those being the softly padded overcoat, somewhat like a gambeson, a belt, baggy trousers, thick aged leather boots, and an arming cap. Their weapons must be sourced on their own, whether from their family, their money, or "borrowed" pieces from the armory. Though dull and oft unexciting, the job of a gatekeeper is of major importance, and without them Seltersachen would fall, likely within days.
