This is Wonder, who is one of seven guardian dragons assigned to the various monuments of the world. In this current era, he is in charge of protecting The Great Pyramid of Giza located in Egypt, along with it's secret artifacts. His generation of guardians is known as the "Newfound", making Wonder known as Newfound Wonder.
He is simply the most submissive dragon in his group, but he is so because he loves seeing the others happy. He has a positive standing in the eyes of the other guardians and is best friends with Ambition and Curiosity, who he has known since before they were assigned their roles as guardians. He is quiet and often hides a lot of himself from the others unless they are really close with them, but that doesn't mean that he won't turn into a demanding leader in charge when things look dire.
He is a simple crimson in color, with blue eyes, black horns and eyebrow spikes, white claws, and wings that go from grey to black, just like the Goddess Tiamat whom he is (unknowingly) descendant from. He has a pink forked tongue, and teeth that don't show unless viewed from the side. Lastly, the soles of his claws are grey like his belly, and only consist on the bottoms of his feet, not the backs of his legs.
When it comes to his likes and dislikes, he loves to bask in the warmth of the happiness of others, and hates seeing anyone in a bad position. What he also loves to bask in, is the rain whenever possible, but because he is stationed in the desert for most of his time, he never gets his chance. Another thing he adores is sweet foods, which in turn has oddly affected his biological structure. If you were to lick or bite into his scales it would taste sweet, with the exact flavor varying to whomever tries it.
As noted by his inability to enjoy himself, he doesn’t like his overclocked position of guarding every day almost every waking hour. Necromancy and the undead are an odd dislike, but he has them for many reasons, believing the practice is very immoral and that the dead should rest and remain undisturbed. His dislike is further pushed by the fact that he is guarding a necropolis, which leaves him a bit uneasy, but he has little choice in the matter of his post. Throughout his adventures, besides focusing on the main antagonist of the story, Tiamat, Wonder and the other guardians must fight a cult of humans looking to obtain the artifacts of the monuments (mainly the Ankh) from around the world, all or most of them being of the evil necromantic type. As mentioned before, Wonder is very much a docile being, and will almost always try to talk things out with aggressors before initiating combat. The only cases where he attacks without hesitation is against the evils mentioned prior.
Wonder has a small collection of powers, but more powers come at a price at them being much less powerful then the few select powers that the other guardians have. All of the guardians have the power of having a spectral form, where they become charged with energy and have their colors exaggerated, during which their bodies heat up and their elemental attacks are much stronger. Looking at his attacks, he possesses psychokinetic (PSI) sparks, which infuse electricity and flames into a single energy ball, but to a weaker effect than a pure fire or electric attack.
Along with these powers comes a blessing and a curse, which come with the strange insignia on his front right claw. The curse stems from his divergence away from Tiamat, the Goddess of evil dragons, and the pursuit of fighting for good. He has the power to heal himself and others to full health, but Wonder in return is very susceptible to physical attacks that are even the slightest bit sharp. He also has the ability to see into the past and the future, but not very far. This would still appear to be beneficial, but these foresights are very similar to dreams, and are thus not always remembered, and may not even be true in the first place. This means a foresight about the end of the world may either be something to worry about, or something to just brush off, but he will never know until it is too late.
In regards to the lore and story, the world is that of what I would call “modern magic” being the world that we live in today, but magic is prevalent, and some technological advances in weaponry and transport never happened. Fantasy races along with any of you wonderful anthros out there are also a norm in this world. These factors present, I would also love to incorporate others in this community into the overall story in the works, via references or minor characters.
Originally Wonder was designed as an EarthBound-like sanctuary guardian for a long since canceled fan game, and would join the party more akin to a persona or demon in the Shin Megami Tensei / Persona series when defeated.
The spectral design came up when I was experimenting with 3D model posing in Garry's Mod, and the color combo stuck with me and became apart of Wonder's design.
This is probably a lot of info for a character I won’t be drawing myself for a long time, but I want to see how others can portray the character in commissions, and have been sitting on the story ideas for a good couple years and am just now putting things in motion.
I won’t be drawing things myself very often with the exceptions of reference sheets, but the next one will likely be of Ambition, Wonder’s best friend (and eventual love interest).
