WELL. This morning I was woken up at 5AM to a frantic "WAKE UP HURRY C'MON" from my boyfriend.
Turns out he was walking home from work and found a snake in a parking lot....so he stuffed it in his hoodie and brought it home for me LOL.
I'm so proud of my boy x) He doesn't know a whole lot about native snakes, so he wasn't even sure if this guy was venomous or what. Of course, it isn't, he's a completely harmless little Eastern garter.
Right now he's in a very temporary bowed-front 5 gallon fish tank, with coconut and moss substrate. I have a spare 10 gallon downstairs that just needs a cover, so I plan on putting him in that :]
I don't know how long I'm going to keep him, I know I will probably release him eventually. I'm kind of curious as to how far I can go with getting him to accept handling. Also, the live-bearing aspect of garter snakes really appeal to me...hmm C:
SO YEAH here's nature's birthday gift to me! :D

Very pretty snake there. I used to have a couple of ribbon snakes a while ago..ne that went from a foot long to about 3 or so feet in just over a year. He loved to eat rosies (some sort of fish) and guppies..and the occassional tree frog. I actually bred so many guppies I had a never-ending supply for him XD...and he didn't mind behing handled. He went to school with me all the time actually..snuck him on ths bus multiple times! Mostly because he went in my backpack in a little container. everybody thought he was awesome.
Sorry for typo's..my computer is crapping out big time for some reason.

Cool. My brother had one for awhile and eventually released it back where he caught it. It definitely liked being in the tank outdoors when possible, and got excited about being in fresh air. And they are escape artists. Also, Wiggles (I think that was his name) absolutely refused to eat mice, and instead ate minnows from the bait shop, three at a time. He had been living down by a pond when my brother caught him. Depending on the weather where you live, you might have to release him at a time safe for his hibernation behavior. Anyway, happy birthday! :)-<
Yeah, different locals will eat different things. That's one of the reasons why garters are so wide-spread in the U.S. and Canada, though. They can adapt to SO many different environments.
I'm thinking I might keep him over the winter and suspend his hibernation, though I'm still not sure. I might just hibernate him anyway, or maybe release him before it even gets to that. I'm not sure yet! D:

The one nice thing about snakes is they are very inexpensive to maintain. Of course, there's always got to be a backup fund for vet bills and things like that, but they're probably some of the easiest to maintain reptiles. Especially garters, they're VERY easy to take care of :D
You aren't technically allowed to collect them from the wild. But there's no way for the government to determine that 1) I didn't buy the snake from a private breeder or 2) it wasn't a gift from someone who bought it from a private breeder soooooo even if I'm "caught", they can't really enforce anything :P
Reptiles as pets aren't all too restricted here. I've had several of my animals shipped across state borders, there's really no issues :)

Mmm, I never understood why its so strict here, Its always something about keeping native species which I assume happens heaps in other countries :I I know we can't get reptiles from other countries because they bring in diseases or something too its a shame, I'd really like a chameleon :P
I want one! His eyes are so cute looking!! My husband said, all rounded pupil snakes are non-venomous I wasn't even in born in texas like he was but yet I know that's not true. I love all snakes but mostly the rounded pupil ones cause of the eyes. My favorite venomous type is the cobras, their hoods are neat.
