RING! The phone on the desk within the locked office demanded attention as it had been for the past six rings. It was answered only by the rustle of papers and the continued clicking of a nearby keyboard.
RING! The phone's persistence was only limited by the caller on the other end. It got answered again with a few more clicks of the keyboard followed by a printer whirring to life.
RI-! This time the phone was cut off in mid-statement as a large three-fingered paw picked up the handset, a deep and mature voice answering with, ”Dean Quaza.” The large Legendary sky serpent the voice and paw both belong to brought the receiver to his ear.
“Yes? Good to hear from you… Wait, what? He did what? Oh dear Arceus no… Not her…” The polo shirt-clad Rayquaza faceclawed, his glasses falling to his desk with a clatter. “Why her? So brave… At least she's with Arceus now.”
The voice on the other end continued and Quaza nodded, replying, “I see. I will definitely increase the alert here on campus, but I will keep it low key. It wouldn't do to needlessly stir up the Beedrill hive. At the start of the year no less.”
Quaza nodded to himself and the voice on the other end again. “Yes… I have been keeping track. I know about the changes. Sorry to hear about the train wreck. An unfortunate fact of life that such things happen.”
He rose from a seated position, his body not exactly conducive to proper use of a chair. “Yes, don't worry. I'll be there. I wouldn't miss Kat's memorial service. Still on for spar next week? Good. Oh, do go easy on young Ray. He's doing his best. His mother could drive even you insane. See you then. Take care, Felix.”
Quaza put the receiver back into its cradle before turning and gliding away from his desk over to the windows away from his desk, despite his having a corner office with two walls of windows, looking out over the campus of the Johto Combat University. His school. His pride.
He sighed heavily, deep in thought about the news he'd just received, feeling even older than he already was. His eyes wandered down to the long row of pictures set along the windowsill. He reached down and picked one up, holding it close and peering intently at it. In it was himself along with Felix Felinduce and Katherine Meow at the dedicating of the university. Felix always with his perpetual scowl while Kat looked as bubbly as ever.
He touched a claw to his lips then to Katherine's image. “You will be dearly missed, Kat. You were a bright star in a sea of darkness. It has been said that that which burns the brightest burns the shortest. You were a light for many of us and your memory will always continue to be. Perhaps some day we will meet again in Arceus's embrace. With luck, by then I may be able to bring news that your killer has been cast into Giratina's realm for eternity. You fought and fell valiantly. Rest now. You've more than earned it.”
He quietly put the picture back into the row then stared out quietly over the campus grounds, eyes quietly searching here and there before finally focusing on the horizon back towards Kanto. His expression darkened slightly as he fished into his shirt pocket and came up with his cell phone. He started it dialing a stored number and held it to his ear, hearing the ring answered before the second ring. “Hello?” came the voice on the far end.
“He's back. I don't know how or when. He got Katherine Meow. Call the troops and stand them up on alert. I'm going to quietly circle the wagons here. Keep it low. See you later.” He was a little terse with his reply but with good reason. Whoever was on the other end seemed to understand though, staying silent until he hung up. Quaza put his phone down on the windowsill and growled to himself, “Come on you rotten son of a bitch… This time I'll be ready for you.”
His phone twittered at him as he put it down, his desk computer echoing the sound, the scheduler keeping him up to speed. He turned to the cabinet in the corner of his office, opening it up and shucking his shirt. He hung his polo shirt up in the cabinet before pulling out a sky blue button-down dress shirt, buttoning that up and following it with a navy blue sport coat. He followed that up with an understated, matching striped tie, grumbling as he fiddled with it in the mirror.
He retrieved his glasses from the desk and resumed his fumbling with his tie, growling a bit as several attempts to properly tie it all failed. A knock came on his office door along with a female voice, “Dean Quaza?” He glanced at the door for a moment, still grumbling and fiddling with his tie. “Come in.”
A rather smartly-attired Latias poked her head through the door. “We're going to be late for opening ceremonies.”
“I know, Sylvia. Sheesh, a hideously powerful Legendary and I still can't tie a Windsor for the life of me,” Quaza grumbled in return.
She smirked and moved over to him. ”Please, allow me.” He turned to let her at his tie which she deftly knotted perfectly. Sylvia Draceon, assistant Dean and his right hand 'mon for many years. Quietly he gave thanks for all the help she'd given him.
“It's these talons of mine. Three fingers are not well-suited for dexterity,” he chuckled. “I'm flexible but not in all the right ways.”
She smiled. ”That's one of the reasons I get to keep my job. Now we'd best get going. Don't want to keep the freshmen waiting.”
“That and many other reasons. You earned your keep long ago. Oh, just passing along the word that security will be tightening up around campus thanks to a problem in Kanto,” he replied as he slipped into his jacket and glided towards the door.
“Oh? What problem? This is the first I've heard of it.”
“I'll fill you in later but let's just say it cost Kat her life.”
Sylvia gasped. “Kat's dead?! What happened?”
Quaza shushed her, “I'll tell you more later. Right now let's keep this low-key.”
“Raymond, please! If it's that bad…”
“All I can say right now is ‘he's’ back.”
“He? He who? Eep… wait, you don't mean…”
“I do and please, keep it down.” He picked up a leather-bound folder from the secretary's desk. “The last thing we need is a blind panic.” He looked up in time to see an older female Exploud coming into the office, causing him to tense up a bit.
“Are you kidding?! We need to go to Defcon One on this! The last thing we need is some Arceus-forsaken ShadMMPH!” Sylvia found herself abruptly cut off with a talon holding her beak shut.
The Exploud female smiled and approached the pair. “Dean Quaza, hellooOOOooo!” she spoke in an almost overly-obnoxious British accent. “It's so GOOD to meet you! Who's your friend here and what's this about Arceus-forsaken?”
Quaza smiled politely to the Exploud. ”Ah! Professor Deci Bell! I was told to be expecting you. This is assistant Dean Sylvia Draconus and she's completely pants.” That comment got a rather annoyed glare from the muffled Latias.
Sylvia straightened her own jacket and put on her pleasant exterior once again. ”Pleased to meet you Professor Bell.”
Quaza cut in, “I'm sorry we don't have more time to chat but we're running a bit behind. We have to get to the gym for opening ceremonies. The freshman class will be wondering where we are soon. We'll talk more later but tata for now!” He smiled and fingerwaved as he hastily excused himself and Sylvia, pulling her along with him into the elevator.
Once the doors closed Sylvia growled at him, “What the hell do you think you were doing there, cutting me off like that and calling me pants?!”
Quaza sighed. “Sorry about that, Sylvia. I knew she was coming and also that she's rather the blabbermouth. If she knows it, the entire campus does in seconds according to the last school she worked at. This news we can't have leaking out or parents will be yanking their kids home left and right. Besides, I know just the people who can handle this.”
Sylvia calmed down a bit. ”Okay, you're right… Just for this to happen… It's all so…”
“Sudden? Unfair? Frightening? All of the above and then some? Yes, that it is. That's why we've got to keep level heads and keep it discreet. We have to be on guard but don't telegraph it. Play it cagey. Besides, like I said I've got just the security people to handle this.” Quaza rubbed the back of his neck, looking up at the ceiling.
Sylvia nodded. ”I trust you. Just please don't take any rash actions. If that happened to Kat…”
Quaza grinned. ”Don't worry. Remember, my PhD isn't in combat arts for nothing. I can hold my own. Plus, like I said, I know just the security people for the job.”
Sylvia mmmed and nodded when the door to the elevator opened. “I just hope it can be contained is all.” She held the lobby door open for him. “But for now… I'll race you there, old man.” She snickered and then she was off like a shot, taking to the air.
He chuckled and shook his head as she let her playful nature take over. “I may be old, but I can still pull it off.” He was off racing after her with a crack of his tail. “I'm not a sky serpent for nothing!”
