That's one of the pieces of this story not told. My parents _hated_ cartoons. They actively stopped me from watching them like at 13. I had to sneak-watch scooby doo. They thought Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were stupid. I couldn't get enough and watched them when I could. I was very fortunate to be one of the few that had a VCR at that age and taped it so I could watch them in the middle of the night. I was ashamed to like them.

Irony of irony is that these days my Mom can't get enough of "Family Guy" or "American Dad". I thought about throwing her rhetoric in her face, but nah, it's all good. At least she came around.

I very much feel you on the school experiences. School turns caring people into hard, sharp little diamonds of armor and cruelty. And it seems that this is an example of life giving you a 'double or nothing' bet even early on.
