The story - http://tsa.transform.to/myth/titanic.html - is a modern masterpiece, and also older than some of my lovers. Older than the movie, actually! Jon Sleeper outdid himself. It has everything Tentacolino doesn't - wish fulfillment, tf, characters with personality and relationships and motivations, really well done xenofic, a surprisingly rich lore (humanity is the spoiled youngest child of Ape, whom Nature already spoils, because she wants us to visit the stars and take her with us, because being alone on earth is lonely), tension, sacrifice, love, loss, a rescue quest phrased as a heist, sliiiight influence from a young book series about Animal Morphers that had come out the previous year (telepathic whales, at one point Eagle gives himself red-tailed hawk eyes, the works)...

Really goes to show we'll read anything just to see what the characters do next.

Songs are "Cat's In The Cradle" and "Dance Band on the Titanic" by Harry Chapin. Gone too soon.
