One of the Goosebumps comics features Creeps. There's still mainly the phone used as a contact method, but it's smartphones, of course. And no identity seeds needed either. Prolonged exposure to the Creep phones causes a slow transformation. Likewise, it's confirmed Creeps can have scale colors that aren't purple. We see a green one, a brown one, a blue one, etc.
