Hibiscus Contract: August 2020 (8)
<<< PREV | FIRST | NEXT >>>
CW: Set in a real-ish world during the pandemic; so, expect COVID, death due to COVID, pro-science politics, plus lots of food/discussing food and alcoholic drinks.
August 2020: Theodora suffers a very serious personal blow during the pandemic, Odysseus has to scramble to try to figure out how to keep her from withdrawing totally
Not gonna lie, August broke me. There are at least as many deleted pages as there are in this whole stupid chapter; I re-wrote the second section four times before I settled on something that I was happy with. That said, I am much happier with it. So, all's well that ends well, I guess.
But we're getting more into the thick of things now!

Oof, the raw, ragged GRIEF in this one.. It just wrenches at the heart.
The weariness, exhaustion, worry, and the feeling that she's slowly losing her mind.
Very clever use of her phone here to summon him without her needing to do anything unusual on her part. :)
Also very smart of her to ask to see the contract first. XD

After you mentioned that v3 was a little scattered, I realized why I felt like it wasn't coming off strong enough: I had dropped off all of the emotional momentum from the first section, and I re-wrote it with that in mind and the idea of how she's trying to process everything as it happens.
I'm glad you liked the summon! I haven't decided how much I'm going to get into it yet, but the thing about modern magic in this world is that there just has to be an equivalent and proper intent: bumping elbows instead of shaking hands, or a lit phone screen in a dark room instead of candles, etc. There are some Big Magics that stand on ceremony, but most of it doesn't.
Ahaha yeah, she's the type that skims the ToC before she signs up for something. A contract with a demon? Yeah, let's see that fine print, lol.
