Orange Shirt day commemorates the struggles of the world's indigenous peoples in the face of re-education camps everywhere, but particularly in Canada (the name “Canada” likely comes from the Huron-Iroquois word “kanata,” meaning “village” or “settlement.”). Orange Shirts are worn to remember the experience of Phyllis (Jack) Webstad, who had an orange shirt that her grandmother bought her taken away from her on her first day of residential schooling when she was six-years-old.
