I'm working on worldbuilding for my original species, Dracae. It's just a fun little project, but I hope for it to be an open species one day.
Dracae anatomy differs from humans in a few ways, besides the obvious tails, ears, muzzle, ect. First, they are on average shorter than humans by 5". Their torsos are slightly longer compared to their limbs, so their legs are slightly shorter, but trunk is slightly longer. Because of this they can move around on all fours a little easier, so crawling and climbing is more natural. Their feet have a less defined heel yet they can still walk upright like humans, just not as gracefully or for as long a distance. The big toe is semi opposed, so they can grasp with their feet and the webbing between their long toes allows for better swimming. They have claws instead of nails, but their nails are similar to alligators in that they aren't long or hooked.
There is sexual dimorphism between male and female (there is infinite variation with gender and sex with this species, but I'm just showing the typical biological bodies) where males have generally larger, more muscular bodies with broader shoulders, thicker limbs, larger ears, tails, and antlers. Male antlers are slightly less dense but overall more robust and last between 2-3 years between shedding. Female antlers are smaller, thinner, and more dense and last 3-5 years between shedding. They are viviparous, have external sex organs, and are warm blooded.
Because it's a for fun fantasy species, I will give them hair even though realistically I would not. They don't grow facial hair, body hair of any kind, just on their heads and a little on their ears. Eyelashes, maybe eyebrows.
Their tails are not as long as their bodies, but they do drag on the ground if relaxed. Their tails are thick and powerful for swimming, and end in a paddle much like a crocodile's. They have spikes on their rump where the tail begins and at the end of their tails they have serrated spines that stick out slightly. They can use their tails as weapons, smashing into a threat with great force and the spines also have a poison which is forced out when striking. Their tails also help with balance.
I'm unsure how they would do running, but I imagine they would not be very good at it because of their proportionately shorter legs and long heavy tails. I also am on the fence about giving them wings, because they would not be able to fly with wings so I don't see how they would evolve to have them. Vestigial wings? I want to give them wings because they would look cool, but can I balance cool with realism? In my head they live in a world with everything you can imagine, including dragons, elves, aliens, ect so why not give them wings?
