Lou jolted up in his cot, his arm thrashing out and nearly knocking into one of the tent-poles. It was still pitch-black and the sounds of the nearby jungle were almost deafening. Checking his watch, he saw that it wasn’t even 4 AM, but Lou wasn’t tired at all. If anything, he felt more energized than he’d ever been in his life; the quiet thrumming in his body that he’d felt since coming to this island was no longer a bother to him, and instead it felt like a warm flame spurring him on.
He needed to work. He needed to do something while his dream was still fresh in his memory. He leapt from his cot and turned on a flashlight before rummaging through his bag and pulling out a notebook. Furiously and passionately, the middle-aged man let his inspiration flow, sketching out the buildings he had seen in his dreams and bringing them into the real world, even if only in a limited way. Page after page of architectural drafts filled his notebook, not only with buildings from his dream but also ones that had only just come to him in his wild inspiration.
Lou worked on his drafts for hours until sunrise finally came and his hands ached, no longer even able to hold a pencil. Laughing to himself, he slumped back into his cot and flipped through his notebook, listening for the sounds of his construction team beginning to start moving. Looking over his whimsical sketches of treehouses and stilted huts, he did not even notice as the nails on the tips of his fingers and toes began to narrow and darken, nor feeling the slight itch as brown fur began to sprout all across his chest.
With a large group of people already arriving at the island, our four new Guardians need to figure out what to do, and fast. Working from the shadows for the time being, they learn that a construction company has been sent in under rather shady circumstances, but the four friends believe they can turn the situation to their advantage if they work carefully. With the offer of a new life and a real purpose on the table, will the island's newest visitors take the Guardian's lure and give island life a chance?
Okay, now you know the truth; this story was always just a vehicle for me to geek out about indigenous and vernacular architecture. That's only mostly a joke, but expect lots of talk about longhouses, faleo'o, and nipa huts from now on. I might have to put together a whole supplementary document that has all the reference photos and character bios I've got stashed away for this story. Also, I guess this is a rare completely non-sexual chapter from me. Unless you think architecture is sexy (and I do).
