Aeshma, the Pure One
Reference for my OC Aeshma
Some stuff about Aeshma... I am really starting to like her as a character. Pardon my rambling!
My original idea of her going into hiding because she was too stubborn and proud to admit she was wrong was entirely off.
She was supposed to just be a cruel bastard of a villain that betrayed her brother, but the whole thing is WAY more complicated than that. As for her relationship with her brother Azmodeus, he practically raised her, and they were very close once.
A combination of a power hungry king, a zealous cult, lots of manipulation and mind games, only made worse by the zealots who turned it into a terrible feedback loop that got out of hand, fast turned her into a monster. Couple that with emotional hurt when she found out she was being used and taking it out on others of the same race as the one that hurt her, and her zealous followers taking her words too seriously and encouraging her further… and we start to see why she became such a deadly threat.
While she did start the whole thing with wiping out the Dreameaters (the king that used her just happened to be one, a bad egg among the species), her cult sure as hell finished the job and made it way worse... And they were the ones that convinced her that her brother was turning against her and turned her against him, leading her to seal him away so they didn't lose their pawn... ahem, Goddess.
All Azmodeus wanted to do was get her away from those manipulative zealots and talk some sense into her. He cared about his younger sister, and was worried. They manipulated and twisted that into him turning against her, and she ended up sealing him away, and everything snowballed even worse after that.
As for the evil Dreameater that hurt her in the first place, he wanted to do things his own way. He used his cult to generate the fear and energy he fed on without doing it directly to circumvent the safeguard against that built right in to the species by their creator so they would clean up negative energy instead of generating it to feed from. He felt that he was being held back by his creator, and he felt spiteful about that. He also knew Azmodeus would put a stop to his actions. He used her to get Azmodeus out of the way in hopes of taking the god's place, but things did not go as planned when Aeshma realized she was being used and he and his kingdom were wiped out entirely in her wrath.
By then, though, the cult was more loyal to her than him, because they could get what they wanted out of her.
When she killed that first Dreameater, it was a just death. He deserved it, but it quickly turned into a slippery slope. Her first kill quickly became more, and many innocent Enterrans were swept up into something they had no part of and died for no reason other than a Goddess deemed their home impure… they were simply collateral damage.
She went on to destroy his entire kingdom because it was "impure". There were others that followed.
Because of the problems she was causing, several gods gathered together to make a stand against her, and she was sealed away a few centuries after she sealed her brother away. That alliance still stands to this day.
She was sealed away, and it took centuries for her to start to realize what she did wrong, but she doesn’t make serious headway until her family tries to help. Annuka, her younger sibling, was the one to release her, with their friend there to suppress her power so they can show her the consequences of her actions directly. It's them believing in her and sparing her life, as well as Azmodeus being willing to show her kindness despite how much she hurt him that ends up making a break-through, but the journey isn't an easy one for her. While she was sealed, her followers finished what she started, and blew everything she said even more out of proportion, becoming a dangerous force that terrorized Enterra for ages, though they have since lost power and faded to obscurity though a few sects still follow the terrible views they had before she was sealed.
She has to contend with everything she did, how terribly she misused her power, and how she treated the brother who only wanted to look out for her. On top of her old thoughts and views constantly trying to sneak their way back into her mind.
She had a LOT of time to think while sealed away, and now that she’s faced with the consequences of her actions, she wants to take responsibility for her actions and make amends, but she has the constant battle going within her. Between her earnest attempts to better herself and her terrible temper and pride, she has a lot of trouble with it. She really does try. Azmodeus still loves his younger sister... And if he saw her actually trying, he would be there for her even if he is still hurt by her betrayal. Him still loving her would be a major turning point for her.
