As I sat in the room in the facility, the staff explained what had happened while I was sealed and told me there was someone who knew me and volunteered to help me get adjusted to the present day. They gave me written directions, and asked me if I could read them, I nodded and after a few more questions and filling in forms, they told me that the rest of the paperwork would be sent to my acquaintance’s residence. The staff bid me farewell, I responded in kind, and off I went.
It was strange.
While I was walking to my destination, I expected people to…well, either run away from me in fear, or try to attack me for what I am, but…nothing. People went on their way, if nothing was amiss. Even more astonishing were the many races that were walking about. Humans, beastmen, elves, angels, demons and many others races walking, bike riding, flying, and….what was that thing people did in those metal transports to make them move again, ah yes driving, to whatever location they need to go. Some passerby’s even smiled and waved at me, and I returned the gesture as I went on my way.
It was nice. There was no one fearing me because of my race, no one feeling wayward about my imposing size to other races (mostly humans), no holy congregation after my life, simply because I exist. I never thought the day when the supernatural and natural could walk side by side, but here I am.
It was when I finally crossed the street to my destination, that my good mood was shattered.
Him.
There he was, just standing there fiddling with a small rectangular device, a smart-something or other, without a care in the world. It was when I got closer that he noticed me.
“Hello friend! It’s been a while!” He said happily.
Friend? That was the last word I expected from his mouth, let alone call me that. He either thought of others as pawns, servants, or toys for his amusement, but I’ll humor him for awhile.
“I’m surprised that someone you fought with to the death on a daily basis, a friend.” I answered back, crossing my arms.
An angry growl and a deep breath came from him. It seems I hurt his ego a bit. He continued.
“Kal, that was millennia ago, we can put that past behind us and start over, hm?”
Kal? Nicknames now? Something is not right; he has never acted this way to anyone before. It’s best to not beat around the bush and find what his aim is.
“Well then Varg, I will get straight to the point. Why did you volunteer to be my benefactor? Is there some scheme you’re planning that needs me, or…”
I move closer, arms open, with a serious expression, “Or do you plan to finish what you started so long ago? So help me if you bring innocents into this, I WILL END YOU WHERE YOU STAND.”
A smug smile showed on his face, then snickering, then full on laughter.
“No,no. Nothing of the sort...but...” He leaned in close, a few inches away from my face. The arrogant smile still plastered on him, “If I really wanted to, you really think I would do it here? You know the arena of your demise would be much more grandiose than this…”
There is it, Vargrith’s ego in full glory, but…toned down, dare I say normal? No, passable, would be more fitting.
“However, if it’s a fight you want, not to the death mind you, that can easily be arranged, but we should change the subject, it seems we are starting to cause a scene.”
With that said I looked around and saw we were drawing a small crowd, some a bit worried, probably from the outburst from before.
I composed myself, apologized and Vargrith did the same. The crowd started to disperse and he continued.
“Anyway, I realized that if I continued with my exploits from long ago, I would probably be on the other end of a hero’s blade, case-in-point, I haven’t seen any other demons from our time, besides you of course.”
He laughed a bit after that statement.
“So I sealed myself, willingly, letting the centuries pass. By the time I awoke, my reign was long since forgotten and our race was walking around normally without prosecution. So I thought to myself, why not start over on better terms? Went though the proper procedures and now I run a shop, not too big, but does quite well.”
I never expected anything like this come from him, but things change I guess.
“What I’m saying is, with all the shit you been put through…” I raised an eye with that remark.
“Right, with all the shit I put through, the least I can do is help you adapt to this new world. So, what say you?”
I thought for a bit, and then answered. “Fine, I accept your offer, but I’m watchin-“before I could finish, Vargrith already had his arm over my shoulder and was guiding me down the street.
“Good! Good! Then let me show you around the area! There is a bar not too far from here that a friend of mine owns. He’s very loud for his age, but quite enjoyable to be around, also a fighter, so you could probably train with him if you want. He can also help with finding some jobs for you to do; of course I’ll use my connections as well, also…”
As he continued rambling on, I thought “A drink would be quite nice about now. Or 10.” Not just to drown him out, but to celebrate a new life, with all the joys, sorrows and frustrations it may bring…I hope you enjoy my writings. :_:
