Just a Penny
A Thursday Prompt story

Prompt: ferry
Oh! Well, hi there! Need a lift across? Sure you do, everyone does.
Eventually, heh heh.
It’ll cost you, though – what? How much, you say? You’ll have to forgive me – I’m a little deaf; how much, how much . . . well, inflation and all doesn’t matter much here, but, oh, let’s say a penny, and we’ll call it square.
What? You don’t have any money on you?
Well, don’t that beat all. Get in anyway, and keep your paws and tail inside the boat, right? Wouldn’t do to have anyone fall in, it’d ruin my safety record and look bad on next month’s evaluation.
Why’d I ask for money? It’s tradition, it is! Time was, everyone who came up to me had a coin in their paw. They’d find them in their mouths, or over their eyes, and that sufficed me for payment. But after a while, fewer and fewer people started bringing their money, and now – oof! – people think I’m running a charity here.
How long have I been doing this? You ask a lot of questions, you do. I was here before the Gates were built. Wait till you see them! Big things, really ornate, real works of art. Can’t say too much about the writing on them; I’m not big for poetry.
Okay, here we are. Step carefully getting out; safety record and all. Enjoy your journey. It’s your last one, after all.

It do indeed!
"Through me the way is to the City of Woe;
Through me the way into the Eternal Pain;
Through me the way that runs among the lost.
Justice spurred on my High Artificer;
My Maker was the Divine Authority,
The Highest Good, and the Primal Love.
Before me only eternal things were created,
And I endure eternally.
Abandon every hope, those who enter."

Everyone portrays the Ferryman all doom and gloom, a skeletal hand extended from a black robe expecting payment.
Now I see him as a jolly sort, wearing a captain's cap and smoking a pipe. He regales you with stories of the sea from his own previous life, and giving you a hearty "Merry day!" as you disembark.
Thank you!
