Oli is being exceptionally optimistic about his importance in the grand scheme of things, and the ability of his superiors to set things right. Coming from a highly sophisticated technological civilization, it's inconcievable his trek into the dragonscape wasn't preceded by various kinds of autonomous devices. Devices that would report on, take samples of, and expose lab animals to the dragonscape's environment to see what's going on in there. I'm afraid Oli will be highly upset to discover the code name for his ( her ) mission was ... Guinea pig or lab rat.
The problem with autonomous devices is that you lose connect to the when they go into the dragonscape unless they are given very strict directives to work on their own without feedback which is limited. It's hard to get a drone to do anything more complicated than "go to point A" so a lot of early drones sent in were lost simply due to them losing contact and that drone running into issues.
So it is actually very conceivable considering you're hopping from one reality into another, not a lot of stuff works quite right jumping between realities.

This does make me wonder what goes on within the pool of reincarnation (or however it was called) and how overall that works. I feel like should a person be reincarnated and remember the events that happened prior, it would be interesting to see their reaction (maybe only a select few would remember life to life) but obviously distressing some othera that obviously didn't make it the first time round...or those that see themselves as demons.
Well the short answer is that it doesn't, its an uncontrolled pool of reincarnation.
It's entirely random, a spirit could spent less than a second or more than a million years within the Tidal Chimes of the 1st Construction and they might be pushed into the egg of a drek, a somewhat complicated animal, any other draconic sentient such as an orm or mavõt etc. There is no control in the system and its all basically aleatoric.
Regardless, in reincarnation your memories are stripped from you from the previous life and time in the 1st construction and into your new life. You are still "you" in a way even if you are changed by the genetics of your new parents and the creature you wind up becoming, though you lose your memories of your past lives.
The only way to circumvent that is to force your way from the afterlife which is mostly reserved for more powerful creatures such as the Prejager, mavõtur preserve a bit of what their old life was by storing memories in their powerful spirits though for any creature lesser than a mavõt its gonna be practically impossible to remember any past lives.
