Known in Greek as a Strategos, this one is of particular note. He's Romanus IV Diogenes, a member of the Empire's military aristocracy who, after his marriage to Empress Eudokia, became Byzantine Emperor and reigned from 1068 to 1071. The loser in the Battle of Manzikert to a Turkish army under Alp Arslan, Romanus was ransomed back to Byzantium.
He should've stayed where he was; he was deposed, blinded, and sent a monastery. His wounds became infected and he died.
This sketch was drawn for me by
Shep on his
Rossweisse FA page because I won a contest. It is one of only two pieces of art I have from the late Ted Sheppard, and is part of my Historical Furries gallery.
