In case you dropped in on this page without the context of pages coming before, Tina and Sherryl have ducked into this self-service shoe shop (think a retailer like Famous Footwear) to escape a sudden rainstorm. Sherryl, not being aware of the oncoming downpour prior to their shopping expedition, was wearing some expensive (new) shoes completely unsuited to walking home in the deluge, so Tina has enlisted herself to help her pick out something to wear home that won't be ruined by the experience. Tina, never one to miss an opportunity to tease, trolls Sherryl with a couple of selections she knows will be rejected before going to her actual choices, a pair of fisherman-style jelly sandals with a platform wedge sole. That's probably more her personal taste though.
Note: when this page was scripted, Crocs had yet to shake their reputation for being the epitome of a lack of fashion sense. Obviously nowadays they're more common than ever, but I wanted to preserve Sherry's retort in response to being offered a pair, as it is borderline out-of-character for her.
Technical:
Among the fixes I felt compelled to make, this page contained one of the most egregious lapses of anatomy, that being the alignment of Tina's eyes in the bottom panel. As originally penciled, her right eye was significantly lower than her left, being directly opposite her cheek ruff instead of sitting just above them. I noticed this after starting the shading/highlighting phase. The other detail that ate up a lot of time late in the coloring phase is that jelly sandal she's holding up. Since the real thing (Forever EA74 if you want to Google it) is translucent, and I can't be bothered to leave certain details alone, I went out of my way to depict the details visible through the straps, and then on top of that, corrected the over-and-under weave of the straps as they cross the midfoot. In real life they only look like they do this, since that entire section is a single molded plastic piece. But draw it out I did, after splitting the center section into three strips amidst all the color shifts, crisscrossing lines, and having to switch from flats to inks to shadows and back. And with this being late Sunday night and in substantial need of sleep, I kept slugging away at this shoe, drawing and redrawing in extreme close-up (and constantly getting stuff on the wrong layer). When I finally finished this collection of details it was daylight again :P.
And I had two examples of this to draw in different 3-D orientations on the next page.
