Trying new species OC

I unsurprisingly had difficulty deciding what to draw. In the end, I just decided to draw a bird character, since I’ve been exposed to so many cute bird characters thanks to Rogey, it made me want to branch out. The problem with making new OCs is developing connections to them. If you don’t develop an emotional connection with an OC, they are nothing more than just pixels on a screen with no soul, and you have no motivation to draw them.
I’m actually like this with many of my OCs. The only OCs I feel a connection with are Leon, Parker, Nixie and partially Takoda. I have produced some good pics and stories with a bunch of my other characters, but whenever I try working with them, it feels empty, like I’m forcing myself to work with them.
I actually encountered this problem when I was attempting to write stories based on the mecha I designed, as I realized I didn’t feel as strongly for the characters as the ones in my Novel. Embarrassingly, I can’t recall how I was able to develop strong bonds to my novel characters. Was it the immense amount of time and development they went through?
No matter, I’m still unsure about what the hell I should do with myself. Enjoy the drawing of my take on an anthro Mockingbird. I’ve also developed a strong liking to Troodons (I can’t stop imagining
Agumonofalchemy as one), so I drew one as well, using a scale texture I made following a tutorial.

And I understand when it comes to OCs, especially when you can't think of what to do with them and they loose any joy to them.
Still, it's best to let your feelings for your OCs to develop naturally.

Last week, some of the MLP cast was doing singings and other fun stuff via live stream. I, as a gift for Sweetie Lover, had Clare Corlett do a little something special for him. As it has not been finished yet, I cannot share exactly. However she, Cathy Weseluck, and others did post their live stream videos up on their Instagram accounts. (I can link you to some, if you'd like?)
However, back to "Dinosaur Train, I figured out how to write a comment during the Live Stream with Clare and mentioned how amazing it was how she could still do Tiny Pteranadon after over 10 years! I also thought it was great how she and her father have been able to work on projects together for so long. (She is definitely your typical young adult and, perhaps, may not be as inclined to say working with her dad has been great. Though, later on, I know she'll treasure knowing her father had her involved in his life in such a creative way.)

I'm glad you have gotten to doing birds, Leon. You make such a good point on OCs, too. You have to 'know' them in order to properly work with them. This can be easy, or it can be hard. Personally, through working with pals, like you, I've found that seeing someone excited about your characters and stories really helps make more investment in your work. (Leon's tale on how he got to Nixi and got a twin brother is one I find particularly close to.)
