it was more or less the same for us with DD&SS lol, we picked the pack because it was rpg based, and didnt actually check any of the mods in the pack (though i had an idea of at least a few that were), our first few nights were horrific, was almost a two man job just to get our house built, lol
Lol, we wanted to do more with that pack, and especially with the ice and fire mod, but the pack we chose overstayed its welcome a bit and we dropped it after a month, especially since nobody else joined my server other than a friend who had never played modded before and was still getting used to even vanilla, and all of the recipes were made significantly more expensive, so we went to stoneblock instead and now were doing MC eternal after having beat stoneblock XP
Aw, yeah. Sadly Minecraft servers don't last that long. The hype usually dies within the first two months.
We play from time to time in my friend's server, though I'm having issues to join lately (server is in Europe and I'm from South America, plus Java giving me the "connection closed by remote host" error).
I wish playing with mods was not as difficult (not because of the difficulty in-game, but of how hard it is to set everything up and getting it to work for everyone)

Same, and everyone having time to play and such, but i agree, renting a server for modded minecraft isnt really worth it these days since the server typically dies out quickly, luckily though my friend has been eager to try out new mods so hes actually been actively logging into the server to play with me almost every night so its been going well so far, just with some of our other friends would come join too XP
Oh yeah, def don't LMAO. There's cyclops in every plain that will one-shot you, dragon nests nearly everywhere, sea serpents (like the one in the drawing) near most shores, sirens that will call you to them and attack you, deathworms in the desert.
PS: Don't play with Druidcraft either, it's a great mod but the fucking beetles that don't make any sound have gotten me by surprise so many times I did jump in most of these LOL
