I imagine they are two spirits that are bound to their mountains. They lived together in their youth, so very, very long ago, but they are so long-lived that continental drift has separated them, first limiting the distance they could go together, then reducing that to an ever-shrinking bubble, until, millions of years ago, they touched for the final time, achingly stretching for that final contact. Now they can only greet each other from across a stream that has grown into a valley that is fated to become an ocean. Don't feel too sad for them, though. They know they'll get to hang out again in a mere 500 million years.
