So I set my paws upon a dark road that is shattered and cracked,
The horizon thunderheads and shadows that whisper I can never turn back,
And there beneath lightning snarling and crossed is the key I lack,
Lift a glass and fake a laugh beneath a lurid rainbow sail and a threefold mast.
They promise so much,
Yet when they reach out and touch you it's ashes to ashes and dust to dust.
A child's smile may buy a mile, yet I wonder in the end if nature built a rocket or a pyre.
It's like letting go of a kite or a balloon, watch the wind take it all away like fire,
Is it truly a tower that can build a stairway beyond sorrow or are your blocks a liar?
And there in the vacuum, the wolf that would seek to swallow a universe howling,
All the stars and the planet glowing,
Where the very thing that made it all seems to have no power,
Hope you're ready for those ultimate hours.
I'm going to wait because I cannot seem to appreciate the splendor of your gate,
When I look upon it, all I feel is sadness and hate.
You give life, then you take it all away.
So strange that I'm one of the few to see your face.
