M40 Infantry Railgun
Producer: Elgar Combat Systems, Garion Armory, Lance Weapon Enterprises
Years in Service: 23rd Age 70th Year to Present
Type: Semi-Automatic Railgun
Cartridge: 20mm
Variants: N/A
The M40 Railgun is one of the newer weapons in republic service, however, it is one of the most expensive weapons that a Republic trooper can carry. The primary purpose of the Light Railgun is to be an anti-armor and anti-material weapon, allowing the infantry to have some sort of extra firepower when facing power armor infantry or light vehicles. The weapon is also odd since it uses solid slugs instead of the more conventional munitions that are quite common within the Republic. Since the weapon is newer, it suffers from being rather temperamental to deal with, and thus soldiers who are issued the M40 complain about the amount of maintenance this weapon has.
Coming in at 105cm long, the M40 is a rather long and heavy railgun but it does have one interesting feature. Which is its loading process, instead of feeding on a detachable box magazine or being belt-fed; the M40 is a single shot, break action railgun. This means that with every shot, the operator has to open the action, insert a new slug, and then close it. The front of the railgun is made to pivot, similar to the old fashion double-barrel shotguns. When it comes to its ammunition the M40 railgun uses a heavy, solid 20mm slug. There are no other variants outside of the standard produced model, the M40 does have some mountings for things like high power optics, foregrips, laser sights, and so on. As for sights, M40 is given a pair of standard-issue iron sights which consist of a rear rotary diopter and a hooded front post. In addition to the iron sights, the M40 also comes with a set of projectors for holographic screen sights
