Alrighty I made a bit of a sloppy piece of work here with the handle. It's not a handle I've made like all the other ones I have, but it's actually a handle I ripped right out of the eye of an adze eye claw hammer.
The hammer head was very loose and this handle had been banging around on a shelf for a while now and I grabbed it to use for this project solely because this digging tool isn't going to need a handle like the ones I've made before.
It will not be seeing harsh use because it will just be used for digging in the loamy dirt and cutting roots.
The adze eye hammer handle has a rectangular tenon to go into the eye of a rectangular hole hammer.
I had to super glue some extra mass on the sides and rasp it into an oval. This worked quite well.
There is one problem with the tool I made and that can be seen at the bottom image. The hatchet blade slants to the right quite a bit and I only noticed that way too late to be able to do anything about it. If it were for a proper hatchet I'd use for wood working I'd totally correct it, but since it's only for cutting roots I could care less for the time being.
